Calabria, Florenzi or Saelemaekers – Pioli’s options amid Messias absence

By Isak Möller -

Junior Messias has been ruled out for a month and this means Stefano Pioli will have to change the ‘main’ starting XI. The Brazilian had done well lately but fortunately, the manager has many options to replace him.

The obvious choice is Alexis Saelemaekers. He came off the bench against Tottenham and there’s no doubt that the 3-4-3 formation suits him quite well. Having always been somewhere in-between full-back and right-winger, that was expected.

However, Davide Calabria is also quite high up the pecking order. The Milan captain hasn’t played since the game against Torino (also due to an injury) and he’s eager to be back on the pitch. With the new formation, though, it’s not ideal for him.

Moving on, having recovered from his injury, Alessandro Florenzi also has a pretty good chance of getting playing time. He’s known for his attacking abilities but he’s not quite a winger, which is why this formation could be perfect for him just like Saelemaekers.

Finally, Sergino Dest deserves a mention but nothing suggest that he will get the chance.

  1. Pls Milan should start playing the 4-3-3 formation because that tactical formation favour Milan the reason is because of the attacking team Milan may face like Bayern, mancity, Liverpool or Chelsea so no everytime 3-4-2-1. 3-4-2-1 is Good not everytime the best is 4-3-3 since Milan can attack and defend

    1. Changing back to 4-3-3 at the time when we need results is crazy. That formation is good, the players we have theoretically suited the formation and ideally we should change back to 4-3-3 later, but to change from the formation that (finally) got us results after horrible phase in January is crazy, especially in those high stake game.
