GdS: Cardinale due in Italy for two crucial games – he will tackle a pair of renewals

By Oliver Fisher -

Gerry Cardinale is expected in Italy again next month to deal with some key issues that are high on the agenda at AC Milan, a report claims.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), Cardinale seems to have very clear ideas about his projects and is planning his return to Milano for the matches against Juventus in Serie A and Chelsea in the Champions League.

The new ownership want to put their stamp on things starting with renewals and that of Stefano Pioli, given the Rossoneri head coach has a contract that expires in June 2023. The relationship between Pioli and the club is excellent and everyone is on the same page, so the plan is to extend his deal until at least 2024.

Another decisive renewal is that of Rafael Leao, one which promises to be complicated because of the player’s value but also due to the fine owed to Sporting CP. Cardinale’s evaluations will be decisive, as he must make a choice on making a big effort economically to keep him or making the bold choice to sell.

  1. Although Leao can drift in and out of games at times, there is no denying that he has unique qualities that can change the outcome of games. Players like him are hard to come by and I don’t know if selling him will enable us to find a player or players that have his qualities. In short, he is special and we may want to do what we can to keep him. For those of us who remember when Sheva, Kaka, Silva and Pirlo left, we can tell you that it sucks to see them in other colors.

Most likely not but it would allow us to strengthen the squad though. Better players in other positions too. Statistically one great player is easier to contain than 3 good ones. If selling Leao solves our RW issue and we still get a good enough LW as well, then it might not be a huge issue losing such talent.

        1. The worst thing would be to lose him for free in 1,5 years and Leao already having his mind elsewhere next season. That would mean 0 money and awful results on the pitch by the player whose focus was on “which club to join next summer” instead of focusing on helping the current team.
