Reijnders

CM: The ‘centrality’ of Fonseca’s ‘chessboard’ – Reijnders renewal crucial for Milan

Tijjani Reijnders’ role has consistently shifted since joining AC Milan last summer. However, his minutes have not, so the Rossoneri are looking to extend the deal of a player ‘central’ to their project.

When speaking about Reijnders, it is difficult to avoid his impact. Under Stefano Pioli, the Dutchman’s role fluctuated heavily, with him being used almost everywhere in midfield. However, there was never a complaint. Of course, there were times when he looked less comfortable, but he still worked for the team.

For this reason, it is easy to understand why Paulo Fonseca has taken a liking to him. So far, only three players have played more minutes – Mike Maignan, Christian Pulisic, and his midfield partner Youssouf Fofana – but this is without taking his suspension into account. Without it, he probably would be closer to Maignan.

There have been talks about a new contract in recent months and after three big goals in two games, Milan see him as a ‘staple’ of the team and are beginning to make ‘increasingly frequent contact’ with his entourage to discuss a new deal, as Calciomercato.com write this morning.

Whilst his current deal does not expire until 2028, there is a rising level of interest from the Premier League in the Dutchman, so the club are looking to armour him until 2030 with a salary increase.
