CM: Atalanta insisting on Caldara return; Milan’s issues with potential deal

By Nikita Fesyukov -

Mattia Caldara has had a difficult career at AC Milan so far, having only collected 2 appearances for the senior side. The defender has been struggling with an Achilles tendon rupture and cruciate ligament rupture more recently. However, he could soon return back to action, seeing as he was present in the last couple of list of call-ups.

Nevertheless, Milan are still very cautious about the player’s return to the field and in the background, there is also the interest of Atalanta in their youth product.

As reported by Calciomercato.com, the Nerazzurri are looking for a first-rate reinforcement for the defence and have identified Caldara as a possible signing in the January transfer market, given his knowledge of Gasperini’s tactics and the environment. For this reason, Atalanta have restarted contacts with the Rossoneri to understand the feasibility of a potential deal.

But negotiations are still difficult. One of the obstacles is the high salary of the player – over 3 million euros per season – but there are bigger issues. The first is economic and concerns the residual value of the player in the Milan budget which is around 25 million euros. Many, too many for Atalanta to buy the player back easily.

The second, perhaps more important, is the will of Milan who still consider Caldara a player o great value and do not want to let him leave. In short, the Rossoneri are willing to wait for him and would only let him leave in the event that a crazy offer arrives.
