CM: Cardinale has the ball in his court as Leao shines again for Milan

By Isak Möller -

Rafael Leao was the big hero for AC Milan in last night’s derby win and the contract situation has inevitably been brought up again. A lot will depend on Gerry Cardinale, the Rossoneri’s new owner.

RedBird Capital, led by Cardinale, have just taken over Milan from Elliott Management and there will be some changes within the club. However, the project will be similar and the dilemma regarding Leao’s renewal thus remains.

As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, Leao showed his class in the 3-2 win against Inter, bagging a brace and assisting Giroud’s goal. There are no longer any doubts about what he brings to the team and Milan are fully aware of this.

Cardinale got to see the Portuguese winger live and he will now have to decide the strategy for the renewal talks. It will be handled by Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara, but the economic margins must be set by the owner as Leao is currently asking for €7m per year.

  1. He ain’t gonna get more than 3m +2m in performance related bonuses.
Can he see that Georgian kid in Napoli?
Milan should buy that kid from Napoli if we can.
Leao seems like a kid with issues.

    1. Leao has money problem.
but his agent though, is a kid with issue.

As long as mendes doesnt do dirty transfer like Raiola, then its fine. it is their job to do their best for the player

      let the businessman do business

    2. So deny leao 7m something ibra earned last year at the age of 39 and try get the kid from Napoli who just got there and hope for the best? Play much fifa do we?

    3. Well that kid was offered to us 6 months ago and would cost only 6 mil I remember milan veteran kaladze brought him but milan did not buy 💔 so bro buying him from napoli don’t even dream bro

    4. Leao “seems like a kid with issues” ? LMAO!!!! In what way? Financial? Yes. He owes 20M which is a factor in asking for a larger salary. Other issues = NO. Where do ppl come up with this garbage?? And your a Milan fan?? Why does he have issues? Have you ever heard of anyone speak poor of him, that he was lazy in training, out partying all night, causes problems in the dressing room for the coach or with other players??? NO. More BS. It’s unreal the fake stories ppl will create just to support their false narrative.

    5. Kvicha was at Moncada’s radar & we even want to land him, but we prefer CDK as no. 1 target & Napoli moves faster. But he isn’t at Leao’s level yet.

I think if Leao can keep the MVP this season or compete for Top-Scorer (top 3, at least), he is deserves the 7M per year.

  2. 7 mil per year for Rafa is only what he deserves. Not to mention that he currently earns only 2 (if not even less). So, if the new owner wants to make Milan top club, giving 7 mil to your best player for the next 5, 6 years, is only fair.
And for those who think we can buy unpronouncable Georgian kid from Napoli… well, if ANYONE can do it for less than 150 million, hats down!

  3. www. spotrac.com/epl/rankings/weekly/

Players salaries. Look at players over 7M – Ben Chilwell 9.8M; Anthony Martial 13M. So pls don’t say Leao isn’t worth 7M not base it on the consistency argument as neither Martial nor Chilwell nor Rashford, Lingard, Rabiot, etc….are “consistent” .

      1. Leao needs to get a big raise.
But I don’t think we can compare players salaries from EPL and Serie A ( or any other league).
EPL is in a league of their own.
For players to stay in Italy and resist the money allure of EPL will require huge sacrifice
Unfortunately not just Milan but all Italian clubs will have impossible time holding on to their players, as we have seen since the Calciopoli scandal there is an exodus of the best players from serie A.
Hopefully things will change once Milan builds its own stadium and increases the revenue

        1. Agreed we cannot compare with EPL. But Rabiot and Vlahovic play in Italy and both make 7-7.5M. So Leao at least wants to be one of the highest paid players in Italy especially after being named the MVP (whether he deserved it or not he got it). To me that is reasonable

    1. I agree & hope RedBird give leao 7m euro nett include bonus. But if he start ask more like 8m euro nett or more , i will personally say just sell him to EPL club or highest bid AC Milan can get. Lets hope leao sign the renewal with 7m euro nett

  4. I would give Leao the 7m but I am worried that Jorge Mendes will raise the demand again because Cardinale raised the wage ceiling, always for asking for more than the ceiling and ultimately sending Leao on to another club because that’s just what Mendes wants.
