CM: Klopp era ends at Liverpool – Milan listed among potential next destinations

By Oliver Fisher -

An era is coming to an end at Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp announcing this morning that he will leave the club at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Calciomercato.com recall that Liverpool and Klopp had become almost inseparable, with the German regarded as a character who in terms of popularity was perhaps the only one capable of coming close to the unforgettable Billy Shankly, at the helm of the Reds from 1959 to 1974.

Klopp declared in an interview released to the club’s official channels that he will leave once the season is done, and he gave one clue regarding his future: “I will not coach any other Premier League club other than Liverpool.”

Where might his future be? Klopp has admitted in the not so distant past that he likes Italian football and he is an admirer of the project Milan are building, while he idolises Arrigo Sacchi who is of course a legendary ex-Rossoneri boss.

Thus, Milan must be considered as a leading option if he were to fancy trying an experience in Serie A. However, his latest increase in salary – after his renewal in the spring of 2022 – means he earns €19m gross per season making him one of the best paid in Europe.

Juventus are also mentioned as being a candidate but they are in a Scudetto fight with Massimiliano Allegri, who is under contract until 2025.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are listed in the article but the former are tied to Carlo Ancelotti until 2026 at least, though an opportunity like this one could lead them to re-evaluate things.

Bayern Munich or the German national team are two other possibilities. However, the former have Thomas Tuchel until the summer of 2025 as per his contract, though there are doubts emerging about his future after a difficult season so far.

Germany meanwhile have just appointed Julian Nagelsmann and they are committed to having him in charge for the European Championships in the country next summer.

  1. 100 times better than people’s fav Conte, Motta and De Zerbi that everyone thinks will instantly win every game once they come here somehow

  2. Sorry to disappoint but KLOPP TO MANAGE IN ITALY ISN’T HAPPENING IN A MILLION YEARS.

He’ll take a year off then take over from another all time great indeed he’ll have his work cut out to better the one the only KING CARLO AT REAL MADRID.

    1. Yep, and with the growth decree scrapped chances went from slim to none. I say either Bayern immediately, or Bayern or Madrid in 2025 when their current coaches finish their contracts. Xabi Alonso or De Zerbi to Liverpool. Strange for Klopp to announce this in the middle of the the season while Liverpool are a battling for the league title.

  3. I’d love to see Klopp’s pearly whites grinning at a Milan press conference as the next guy but can’t see it. We’ll end up with DeZerbi or someone and do about the same (or worse) as we’re already doing with Pioli.

  4. Man has 20M salary. Never gonna see him coach Milan unfortunately. He’s gonna go to spain or ger national next..maybe Chelsea will try to flex but he isn’t gonna accept that job.

    1. Now this is a real coach. We want “Klopp”, we don’t want a “Flopp!” To be a world beater, you need a REAL coach! I know it wont happen, but for Milan there should be nothing but the best. Invest the 20mill per season, and bring a real coach, then see the difference with this very same squad.

  5. Nothing less than one of these options:

    1. Klopp
    2. Xabi Alonso
    3. Guardiola
    4. Ancelotti
    5. The coach of girona, whatever his name is.

3 are world beaters, 2 seem to have huge potential.

    1. That Girona coach is Michel, and he’s been around for a bit. Girona/Michel is a Leicester/Ranieri situation, so not sure that’s the right coach for us, as opposed to an up and coming tactician with fresh ideas. I’d rather Farioli or De Zerbi. Of course, from this list Guardiola and Klopp are the top.

    2. You don’t even know the name of Girona’s coach. Interesting, that got me questioning whether you even know what kind of football Girona plays, or what kind of formation he usually uses, etc. How could you suggest a name without prior knowledge to all these? Are you just suggesting because he’s the flavour of the month or something? Because had you been watching Girona at the very least, I’m pretty sure the guy’s name won’t escape you.

  6. Until Milan gets serious and hires a real proven coach, they shouldnt be taken seriously. Fired maldini, kept Pioli, hired ibra…. these guys are complete jokers. Better they sell to the arabs who wont make an issue to spend big.

    1. Lol what does hiring Ibra have to do with anything? He’s a consultant to Cardinale and an intermediary between the locker room and ownership/management, not a decision maker.

  7. Milan can’t afford him. It’s simple. And their coaching will likely follow the same model as their player acquisition. Young progressive coaches, like Motta probably.

DFB will likely tempt him to take over the Team before the EURO’s. They can’t afford to flop on home soil.

  8. Klopp, Pep, Conte, Mou is big signing dependent kind of coach, so it’s not gonna happen.
we are sort in the budget, we pay the loan debt, we must balance the book, we build new stadium till next 5 years, we bla bla bla

  9. If gerry is willing to give him 10m it could happen but as klopp said nothin for another year. Will be harder with no growth decree though

  10. This would be absolutely incredible but he would have to be willing to take a substantial pay cut. Maybe the sporting spirit could win out and convince him, if he ever decides he could settle for a “paltry” €10m/yr after earnings so much at Liverpool.

  11. If we get bought out by the PIF – then this is definitely possible – but with Redbird – keep DREAMING lol. Wage caps and moneyball aren’t going to fit with Klopp now

Ahhh….but what an amazing dream it would be

  12. There are parts of me who do want to see Klopp coaching Milan, but honestly I don’t think we can afford a coach so expensive. Plus he will want some names, some of them pretty expensive.
Also Klopp is not an immediate results garantees, but rather slow and progressive, so don’t expect a scudetto right away with him.
What I do like about him is that he is the pinnacle of whatever we’re trying to do. We wanted a 4-3-3 with a high pressure line, he knows how to do that perfectly. I say the caveat is that he is also a coach who has to deal with a lot of injuries because of that, but he and his athletic team know how to manage that (at least better than our current staff).

  13. What is the point of an article like this one, in a website dedicated to AC Milan??? With his salary, this will NEVER happen. The odds that he will coach Milan are less than zero. So, this is a completely pointless article. I don’t even understand the purpose of posting this kind of article here.

Good luck Mr. Klopp in your next endeavors. We know it won’t be with AC Milan, though, unfortunately.
