CorSera: Lautaro vs. Leao – the derby sees the two main leaders battle

By Oliver Fisher -

There are many narratives heading into derby matches between Inter and AC Milan, with one of them this time being the battle of the two leaders of their respective attacks.

Today’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via PianetaMilan) previews the Milan derby between Inter and Milan tomorrow evening at San Siro and focuses on two of the absolute protagonists of the derby: Lautaro Martínez on one side and Rafael Leao on the other.

They will be face to face in the match that could give the first real indication as to who could go on and win the Scudetto, even if it is only the fourth round of the season.

Lautaro and Leao are courted by Europe’s elite, but both have chosen Milano, both as Inter and Milan players but also as men. For both, the city is home: here they have friendships, loves, hobbies, business and professional dreams. They have long contracts and big aims, with the 20th Scudetto the main one.

Leao’s decision to tkae the No.10 shirt and renew his contract until 30 June 2028 (with €5m net per season salary, plus bonuses, and a release clause of 175 million euros) has made him even more responsible.

Leao is increasingly the leader of this young Milan squad that has been revolutionised by the summer transfer window, as also admitted by captain Davide Calabria.

In his overhead kick goal against Roma before the break, there were technique and acrobatics on show, with class and artistic flair. It is no coincidence that, in addition to football, Leao makes art – in particular music – his reason for living.

He has already recorded two albums under his stage name, Way47. In the apartment he has in Porta Nuova he has set up a recording studio, where he welcomes his Italian and Portuguese friends.

Meanwhile, as the newspaper writes, Leao has returned from the national team even more recharged. And now he is looking for revenge after the four defeats in the derbies against Inter in 2023.
