CorSera: Milan supporting Fonseca’s stance on Leao despite inevitable price tag decrease

Rafael Leao has started on the bench in the last two league games and the tally should get to three tonight, as AC Milan will take on Monza. The management is fully backing Paulo Fonseca’s decision, as per a report.

There is no doubt that Leao is one of the most valuable players in the Milan squad. A renewal was signed just before the summer window in 2023 and a release clause of €175m was included. However, that valuation has never been more unrealistic than it is now.

Today’s edition of Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) spoke about the situation and made it clear that the Milan management supports Fonseca’s decision. In the eyes of Giorgio Fiurlani, Geoffrey Moncadfa and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, technical decisions should be left solely to the manager.

On the other hand, the management is aware that Leao’s price tag has decreased significantly since the start of the season. If it were to continue like this, a further drop is to be expected and it could perhaps also affect the amount of suitors interested in signing him.

In the meantime, Fonseca is hoping that Leao will improve in the defensive phase and become a decisive player for Milan. The No.10, however, has seemingly already grown tired of the situation as he’s asked his agents to explore a transfer.

  1. It is idiotic to support a mediocre coach like Fonseca. All of this will cause our top players to leave at a discounted price. So next year we will have new coach and a lower quality team. Good job Zlatan Ibrahimovic!!!

  2. Tough times create strong men, and weak men create tough times.
There is no growth without resistance, pushback, or perseverance through tough times.
Fonseca, for all his flaws, is trying to make Leao grow, but Leao proves again that he doesn’t want to grow as he hasn’t grown, developed or enhanced his game at all in now 6 years at Milan.
He finally gets a coach that pushes back and challenges him to be better, and Leao, instead of raising to the challenge, he mopes and sulks around like a little kid. He called his father to be next to him because the new big bad coach won’t let him be lazy anymore.
    Weak a$s.
Since Milan gave him the new contract, Leao has been awful.
Couldn’t score a goal in serie A for 6 months last season. He has scored 1 goal in 3 months this season, and only 1 goal between both seasons in the UCL. He is nothing but a bottom feeder. He pads stats vs. relegation teams and teams from farmers leagues who play with a man down in the Europa league.
He doesn’t produce goals and doesn’t help defensively, but somehow people still think he is not the problem, and it’s everyone else’s fault.
    Time to move on.
When Fonseca gets fired, the new coach should be given a clean slate without weak Lazy L to cause him tough times.

  3. Typical ‘merican corporate behavior. They refuse to take blame for this terrible decision of signing Fonseca. They’ll never admit they messed up and will bring down the entire ship all because of ego. What a disaster.

For all this talk about their accounts, now they’re okay with their most valuable asset losing all its value. Makes sense…

  4. We knew Fonseca was underwhelming from the day they signed him… But he was willing to take €2.5m in salary. When Conte said he wanted €6.5m suddenly we decided he was “too much of a manager”. And we’ll spend the rest of the season struggling while Napoli coast to a trophy.
