CorSera: Punishment likely to stand for Ibra and Lukaku but prosecutor could open investigation

By Oliver Fisher -

The spat between Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku during the Coppa Italia derby at San Siro has made the headlines in the world of football.

According to il Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews), the striker appeared calm to those who saw him at Milanello, but he still wanted to dismiss the accusations of racism against him and did so via a post on his social media accounts.

Ibrahimovic and Lukaku now awaiting the decisions of the Sporting Judge that will arrive tomorrow, but the paper claims that the report from the referee Valeri did not contain anything explosive and therefore we are moving towards a simple one-game suspension for both. These disqualifications would obviously be served in the Italian Cup.

It cannot be excluded though that the Federal Prosecutor could open an investigation based on Article 28 of the Sports Justice Code which punishes discriminatory behaviour.

If that were to happen, audio and video elements of the altercation would be used and further punishment could arrive, even if at the moment it seems unlikely.
