Costacurta on Milan’s defensive struggles and Hernandez: “It’s not his role”

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan registered their fourth defeat of the season as Atalanta prevailed 3-2 at Gewiss Stadium on Saturday evening. Once again, the Rossoneri struggled defensively and this is something Billy Costacurta discussed after the game.

In the first 15 games this season, Milan have conceded 18 goals and that is simply too much for a team that is supposed to compete for the Scudetto. Of course, Stefano Pioli hasn’t been helped by the many injuries, forced to play Theo Hernandez at centre-back.

Speaking to Sky Italia after yesterday’s game, as cited by PianetaMilan, the Milan legend Costacurta spoke about Milan’s recent struggles. He also shared his thoughts on Hernandez, stating that the emergency solution became evident against Atalanta.

“Now Milan must focus on the importance of the Champions League match against Newcastle. Against Atalanta, it’s true that they conceded the goal late on, but they conceded a lot of chances before that. Gasperini’s team shot a lot and had some sensational opportunities.

“18 goals in 15 games is a lot. On the first two goals, Theo Hernandez showed that it’s not his role. If you concede so much to a team that has hardly scored in the last few games, it clearly isn’t a good situation,” he stated.

Milan will take on Newcastle next, as mentioned by Costacurta, and that game is scheduled for 21:00 CET on Wednesday. To qualify for the Round of 16, the Rossoneri need to claim all three points while Paris Saint-Germain also need to lose to Borussia Dortmund.

  1. “On the first two goals, Theo Hernandez showed that it’s not his role. ”

    Thank you Costacurta.
But everyone wants to blame Calabria for everything.
Calabria isn’t the best RB around but most people always look at him Krunic, Jovic to blame, while turning a blind eye when the supposed best players on the team like Theo, Leao and even Maignan play like doo doo, which they have for most of this season so far.
Now Theo did play in a new position but still if you going to assign blame make sure is the right player.
CDK sent the cross from Calabria side but why is Lookman unmarked in front of Maignan even though there were 5 Milan players in the penalty box?

    1. Not for everything… But for his deficiencies. Players need to be held accountable for their actions. Especially if you are captain.

    2. I personally don’t blame Calabria for the 2 goals, but for the red card. It was a bad tackle from him, he was already booked and he knows how much we lack defenders.
Now about Calabria as a whole, he is a somewhat decent RB, but can’t manmark on his own. He either needs some sort of duo/support to help like (like it was done twice against Napoli and against Mbappe) and simply put, a system that doesn’t leave him in 1vs1 situations.
And finally, I agree that Mike is also to blame for the second goal.

      1. Mike to blame for the 2nd goal? WHAT???!!! The one where Lookman blasted the ball from 6 meters out all alone in front of the goal??? So… What was the mistake MM16 did there? Slow to react? Didn’t put his head in front of the ball like against Viola? Didn’t intercept the cross? Please do tell how he could have done better there. I’m truly curious.

        1. I was a bit angry when I wrote this and after the game. I thought he could have saved it, but I guess I can’t really blame him here.

          1. Yeah, I understand the frustration but I don’t think any goalie in the world could have saved it. Powerful (enough) shot from close-range after a horizontal pass from the corner/side.

It would be nice though if MM16 wasn’t required to make one or two world-class saves each game to give us the chance to win. Or not lose.

At least the attitude should change now with Zlatan’s arrival.

  2. Do not make it sound like we have conceded 18 goals SINCE Theo started playing as a CB. Pioli’s failures are massive and costly, do not sugar coat them.

  3. It’s not only the role, it’s the attitude. He played similar matches as yesterday as left back. Distracted, passive, out of position. Taking unnecessary risk with the ball.
Yesterday was the worst man on the pitch by far.
He is having a bad season and maybe he lost motivation.

  4. Well first goal deflected from Tomori’s intervention, why don’t we blame him as well. You folks are looking for scapegoats every match. It’s team’s and coach’s effort. Winning and losing. Team either plays good or they play bad. And this team is just weak.

  5. I realized that this site is working for Pioli for it its main Sponsering his Paralysing milan Projects to be seen normal and giving False Justication and untruthful of Source of injury caised problems.
Is jovotic injured, was Krunic better than Musah,8s Loftus cheek number 10,is Puslic good foot no 11 rathen than no 10, is Scrapy Florenze better than D Bertazaghi. Didn’t acmilan needed no 2 ir right bac.
Is any Price market increased bad Calabria.
Isn’t Pioli respinsible the killing new Well qualified Platers by both using wrong systems and sying them they are not preoared,

  6. I don’t understand why a 18/19 years old players there is no faith in them especially pioli, I would have played Simic, why not???
