Daniel Maldini explains why leaving Milan was ‘complicated’ but ‘needed’

By Euan Burns -

Daniel Maldini has talked about why leaving AC Milan was a complicated decision to make but was the right one for his career.

Speaking during his unveiling as a new Spezia player along with Mattia Caldara and Albin Ekdal (via Milan News), Maldini was very honest about his need to leave the club he has always been a part of to make sure that he continues to develop.

Having had some appearances with the first team, it became clear that he is unlikely to reach the level needed by just staying on the Milan bench and working hard in training.

“Leaving Milan is complicated but I needed to play, to have new motivation,” Maldini said.

He scored when Milan visited Spezia last season and then he scored in the 5-1 win over Como for Spezia in the Coppa Italia a few days ago.

He joked that it is a stadium and team that bring him luck, saying: “It brings me luck! The public is warm, I really like the atmosphere. I also chose Spezia to get more minutes and continuity.”

Another Milan player on loan at Spezia this season is Caldara and he talked about his need for regular football which he cannot have at Milan.

“Mister Gotti also wants us to participate a lot in the offensive movement, and in this I’m doing well. I’m here because I have to find minutes and performance,” stressed the defender, who thinking about the championship said: “We have to score a lot of points, the gap is wider this year.”
