Deschamps explains decision to snub Maignan from World Cup squad

By Oliver Fisher -

France head coach Didier Deschamps has explained his reasoning for leaving goalkeeper Mike Maignan out of the squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

L’Equipe (via Calciomercato.com) reported earlier in the week that Maignan should be on the squad list for Qatar that coach Deschamps would confirm on Wednesday, but then his physical condition would be monitored by the medical staff.

The report added that they intend to wait until the last moment before making a final decision about Maignan’s use or a possible cut from the squad. However, it was confirmed last night that he has not been called up.

Speaking at a press conference on the day the squad list was officially presented, Deschamps was asked about Maignan and more specifically his decision not to call him up, with his comments relayed by SempreMilan.it.

“Obviously, if he is not on the list, it is because it is not possible for him to be operational. The players arrive at Clairefontaine on Monday noon and we don’t have three weeks of preparation,” he said.
