Eye-opening numbers show why Saelemaekers is important for Milan amid tight schedule

As Samu Castillejo is injured, Alexis Saelemaekers made his first start for AC Milan last night, helping his team beat Lazio by a convincing 3-0 scoreline. Although his quality has been questioned, he is very important.

The Belgian was recently signed on a permanent basis by the Rossoneri, who brought him in on loan in January. Due to the Coronavirus, Saelemaekers didn’t get many opportunities to prove himself but he has started the resumption very well.

Last night, he won the penalty as his cross struck the hand of Stefan Radu, enabling Zlatan Ibrahimovic to double the lead. Above all, though, he worked extremely hard until the referee blew his whistle for full-time.

According to data from Serie A, Saelemaekers covered the most distance among the Rossoneri players with 11.5km. Taking the tight schedule into account, his stamina will be important moving forward as Stefano Pioli can count on his effort.
