Gabbia deflated after Fiorentina loss: “We have to look each other in the face”

A visibly frustrated Matteo Gabbia gave an honest reflection after the defeat to Fiorentina tonight, admitting that AC Milan were far from their best and must now do some soul-searching.

Milan’s winning run in Serie A was ended on Sunday night as they lost 2-1 against Fiorentina at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in a dramatic encounter in which there were three penalties – all missed – as well as three goals and a late red card for Theo Hernandez.

Moise Kean was the first player to have a spot kick saved after Theo fouled Dodo, then Yacine Adli – the Milan loanee – gave the hosts the lead. Theo and Tammy Abraham saw penalties saved by De Gea, Christian Pulisic equalised with a gorgeous volley but Albert Gudmundsson won it for La Viola.

Gabbia spoke to DAZN immediately after the game and he did not hide his disappointment at what was a damaging result to go into the international break with. His comments were relayed by MilanNews.

Was there a lack of determination?

“We are not satisfied with how we approached the team. We feel the defeat, it weighs on us, on a team that did not give its best this evening.”

Why can’t you be consistent?

“It’s something that’s right to talk about in the dressing room, we have to look each other in the face and understand why we played like that. We didn’t have the consistency needed to win. We have to look each other in the face and understand where we went wrong, it has to start with us.

“In the dressing room I saw the right amount of anger, the right amount of disappointment. There’s nothing positive, we have nothing to take away [no points], but the team is still aligned and angry about the game we played tonight.”

How much does the second goal sting as a defender?

“We made a mistake in the department. It was a long clearance, we know that De Gea has a good game. Obviously it is undeniable that there was a bad reading, there were many different things that could have been done in the department. It really hurts, it is a goal that we must not accept to concede.”

  1. Captain material. He has grown a lot.
Our right back is a mess. Emerson, Calabria, and Terraciano, none of them are pacy and intelligent. Gimenez is better than all of them. I’m just afraid that Real Madrid will exercise their buy-back option if we give him a chance in the first team. As for our so-called right backs, they can’t even outrun an opponent. I feel pierced in the heart watching our right backs. The management should sign Vanderson of Monaco. Even Singo is better than all our right-backs, but the management viewed him as mediocre when he left Torino for Monaco, and now they decide to buy world-class Emerson Royal, whose market value is higher than that of Singo’s. I pity him against Madrid. Vinicius is going to make that place a cheap passage

    1. Idk what games you watch because Filipo has plenty of speed. He’s just not a defender, he’s a winger forced into the back 4. Any9ne is better than Emerson atm tho, he provides nothing either end
