Gabbia Azzurri

Official: Gabbia receives first Azzurri call-up and ends near 600-day Milan drought

Today, Luciano Spalletti has named his latest Italian National Team squad, and AC Milan will be delighted to see Matteo Gabbia named for several reasons.

It has been almost 600 days since Milan could last say that they had a representative named in an Azzurri squad (the EURO 2024 qualifiers in March 2023), but today, we can change that, with Spalletti naming the central defender in his squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

After Sandro Tonali – the last player to earn a call-up – left Milan, there were questions asked about who the next representative would be, and very few people would suggest Gabbia. Nearly 15 months after the midfielder’s departure, though, there is no player more deserving.

The similarities between the Newcastle United midfielder and Gabbia are clear, both love the club, and there have been questions about the defender’s potential to wear the armband one day, just as there were with Tonali.

After scoring the winner against Inter, his position at the Rossoneri has never been more secure, and with a new contract expected at some point, things are going brilliantly for the defender.

During the summer, Italy were Milan-less, and many questioned it. Now, with Gabbia and Milan among the Azzurri, there can be no questions.

  1. Congrats to Gabbia. Hope he stays healthy. Milan hasn’t really had good luck with their players on international duty.
Patrick Cutrone deserved a call up too.

  2. coach + all of Azzurri staff must be AC Maldini.
& Gabbia is jeri big disappointment, he & Calabria supposed to be rot in Milan bench just like Teraciano

  3. Congrats to Gabbia. He really deserves this recognition.
And to nail down a starting shirt for Milan.

It’s been a very lean run for the club in the national team.
For a long time the only key members of the squad Milan provided was Dollarumma and then Tonali.

  4. Marcos Alonso, a Spanish left back who played for many teams (starting with Real Madrid’s youth academy) and was with Chelsea when they won the CL and several other trophies (not sure how much he contributed as he was mostly benched in favor of Ben Chilwell for the bulk of those trophies), and was also a Spain international.

His grandfather, Marcos Alonso Imaz (a.k.a. Marquitos), played with Real Madrid’s first team for eight years.
His father, Marcos Alonso Peña, played several seasons in Spain’s top flight, most notably for Atlético Madrid and Barcelona, and both represented Spain at senior level.
(this paragraph is mostly copied from wikipedia).

  5. Congrats to Gabbia. But now i’m worried he will pick an injury from NT and Milan would suffer because currently Gabbia is Milan best CB.
