GdS: Milan aiming for a quality midfield – where and how Pioli could use Tonali

By Isak Möller -

Sandro Tonali has been heavily linked with Milan in recent days. However, many fans have wondered what his role will be in the squad, seeing as the Rossoneri already have Ismael Bennacer and Franck Kessie for the midfield tandem.

Today’s edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Milanlive.it) took stock of the situation, providing a few options Stefano Pioli could go with. Tonali, as we know, is a rather complete midfield who can play both as a regista and mezz’ala.

Initially, the 20-year-old could be the alternative for Bennacer in Pioli’s 4-2-3-1 formation, the quality footballer ready to alternate with the Algerian. However, Milan could also decide to focus on a midfield of talent and youth.

In that case, they could play Tonali alongside Bennacer and thus send Kessie to the bench. The manager could also implemented other tactical solutions, such as relaunching the 4-3-3 formation with the Brescia star as the regista.

  1. How bad would it be to pull Calhanoglu out of the equation and replace him with either Tonali or Bennacer?
a few friendlies to test that out
that being said, I don’t think Tonali will be arriving

  2. We finally have a way to get the best out of kessie calhanoglu in the midfield and already toneli is in the picture to scatter things again ….wow …for me regardless of how big they talk about toneli to be a big talent…it will be a big mistake to alter the midfield in is favour

  3. Let him arrive first then we shall know where to fix him…. All I know is that he will never bench Bennaccer but I want him to come so that there would be a serious competition in my Milan team as before.. I respect every Milan player even the bench warmer more than first shirt of others team…
