GdS: Morata and Scamacca the two main targets up front – Pioli’s stance

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are in need of a striker ahead of next season and have been linked with several players in the last few months. However, as things stand, the two most concrete names are Alvaro Morata and Gianluca Scamacca.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has retired, Olivier Giroud is getting older, and Divock Origi as well as Ante Rebic could leave this summer. As a result, the Rossoneri are looking for a striker on the mercato and have been linked with many names.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, the two most concrete targets are Alvaro Morata and Gianluca Scamacca. The latter could leave West Ham after a disappointing season but the details of the operation must be understood first, with a loan possible for the 24-year-old.

Morata, on the other hand, is 31 years old and could perhaps be ‘easier’ to snatch this summer. He scored 15 goals last season for Atletico Madrid and while he has never been a ‘bomber’, he’s always been very consistent.

Stefano Pioli has made it clear that he wants a different profile compared to Giroud, set to alternate between the Frenchman and the new arrival. It remains to be seen if Scamacca will be considered too similar, therefore.

  1. Morata is “different profile” for sure. Hateable. Can’t score. More into dramatic acting/diving than football. Always whining and crying. Too expensive.

  2. Feels like we need about 3 strikers at this rate… I thought Moncada was the master transfer guru and yet we’re linked with these guys and, God forbid, Lukaku…

  3. Can understand why no-one likes Morata, but he’s a consistent goal scorer against smaller sides and if it helps us break down the sort of games we struggle to convert chances in then I’m OK to try it for a year.

Scamacca would be the most interesting long-term fit and would be my preference if a loan was available, though I’d really like to see Icardi for a year or two with a point to prove.

    1. Apparently we have rejected the idea of Icardi….absolute Joke. He would also fit the different profile to Giroud nicely.

  4. Morata is the same profile as Giroud FFS only useless! A different profile would be Retegui or Openda. Morata is 31 and has always been cr@p…Pioli is just a yes man to the new owners. He will keep his job so long as he says yes.

    1. Morata is many things but he’s certainly not crap. I’m not convinced he’d be a good long term signing for this Milan team, but he has a decent record with some exceptional spells and has played at big clubs throughout his career, though has always struggled in big games or pressure situations.

But our issue last season was ability to put away teams from the bottom half that used a low block; maybe he can help with that? Admittedly the biggest change was our inability to deal with their counter attacking as effectively.

  5. I have numbed my expectations for next season, all I’m doing is just preparing mentally for my colleagues to banter me after each disappointment. Cus what we have now is a clueless coach plus management.
