GdS: The pact between Pioli and Leao – ‘finish the season well’

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli and star player Rafael Leao are both on the same page about how they need to finish the 2023/24 season.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Pianeta Milan), there is something of a pact between Leao and Pioli to make sure that the season ends on a positive note so that there is momentum to carry into the 2024/25 season, when Milan have to fight for the Serie A title.

Leao spoke to the press after the 2-1 win over Fiorentina in which he scored the winning goal and he explained this agreement with Pioli that came from a conversation about how the season must end.

The Portuguese forward said: “We have talked about it with the coach in recent weeks, it doesn’t matter how you start but how you finish. We want to finish the season well, without regrets. Today we won, we are also in the Europa League which Milan have never won and we want to win.”

There are only two ways in which Milan can now finish the season well. They have to finish second in Serie A, ideally closer to Inter than the current 14-point gap.

They also need to win the Europa League, or at least get to the final and seriously compete.
