GdS: Pioli finds missing link as he welcomes back key duo for Spezia clash

By Isak Möller -

After the 4-0 win against Crotone, Milan will be looking to finish their pre-derby spell with another three points, taking on Spezia away from home. And with a few key players returning, things are looking good.

As highlighted by today’s edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (via MilanNews), the Rossoneri are welcoming back their key players, namely Ismael Bennacer and Hakan Calhanoglu. Two pillars of the team, and also the link from midfield to attack.

The last time they played together was on December 13, 2020, which is exactly two months ago today. This is obviously way too long, even if Milan have managed, and it’s a relief to see them back together.

Calhanoglu is unlike anyone else when it comes to connecting the midfield and the attack, playing as a true No.10 behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Stefano Pioli was decisive in developing the player, who now is leading the assist standings in Serie A.

As for Bennacer, a lot can be said about what he gives to the team, combining skills to break the lines with many recoveries. In the league, he has an average of 6.5 balls recovered per game, which says a lot.
