GdS: Rafael Leao to appeal hefty €16.5m fine as Lille won’t help him

In addition to bad news on the pitch, Rafael Leao has also had to deal with some off it. Yesterday, Sporting confirmed that the striker will have to pay them a €16.5m fine, after the ruling was made by CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport).

During the court proceedings, Lille – Leao’s former club – made it clear that the dispute doesn’t involve them. In 2018, the youngster terminated his contract with Sporting for just cause, which prompted the club to take the case to FIFA.

After their complaint was rejected, they turned to CAS instead. This time, the outcome was different as Leao has been ordered to pay a hefty €16.5m to the club. Of course, this is an amount that the player doesn’t have.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via MilanNews.it), Leao will appeal the decision, as is his right. Hopefully, the case will work out well, considering that he has enough to deal with on the pitch.
