GdS: Tonali battled flu during defeat to Fiorentina – the revelation

By Oliver Fisher -

Sandro Tonali played in the defeat against Fiorentina on Saturday while not at his best in terms of condition, according to a report.

As revealed by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanLive), Tonali played from the first minute and for the duration of the game in Florence despite being debilitated by a virus, which might explain why his performance was perhaps not at the levels we usually expected from such a talented player.

It left Stefano Pioli with a decision because Rade Krunic was suspended for the game and Ismael Bennacer had also just come back after about a month’s absence due to muscle problems, so there would have been a risk either way.

Not having the two starting midfielders in top form saw the whole team suffer, but of course there were other factors at play that saw La Viola emerge quite comfortable 2-1 victors in the end.

For the game tonight against Tottenham in the Champions League we hope both are feeling much better, but there are reports Pioli will use Krunic instead of the Algerian as Tonali’s partner.

  1. Honestly its hard to understand our management sometimes.
If someone has flu, keep them away from the others!!
Also, use the squad you have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. It’s impossible to understand this reluctsnce to trust the whole squad, especially since it proved a good choice in the past.
Vranckx played decently whenever he was given the chance, why not rest Tonali if he’s sick and give others a chance. Hell, even Bakayoko if you must.
Theo, Giroud, Leao, Tonali are just a few players who are obvioulsy overworked. It doesn’t seem in our best interest for them to play all the time, especially when they’re sick.
I know I’m just an idiot and Pioli knows everything, so don’t bother replying with that.

  3. I really want to back our coach and management. But in my opinion, this is simply unacceptable. We have players who need playing time. They can deliver, maybe not as well but they can do the work.
I love Sandro but we can’t play him for the full 90 when we have a UCL game coming up and he has the flu. He’s enough of a risk in the dressing room let alone on the pitch. Vranckx, Adli, or Bakayoko could have replaced him.
