GdS: No.9 shirt to uncertain fate – what Abraham’s arrival means for Jovic

One of the issues that AC Milan must resolve on deadline day is what will happen with Luka Jovic, given that Tammy Abraham is set to arrive.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Jovic’s ‘fate seems sealed’, both because Paulo Fonseca intends to continue playing with just one striker in a 4-2-3-1 system and also because Abraham is due to arrive this morning for a medical.

When the curtain fell on last season, Milan renewed Jovic’s contract for another year which was perhaps not expected when he arrived on deadline day on a free transfer from Fiorentina, but his nine goals convinced the management.

It was a well-considered decision for two reasons: the first was to protect themselves by having a player in the squad who had nevertheless given an important hand at certain moments of the year, the second was to have at least a minimum value of the contract in the event of a sale.

When the Abraham rumours had faded and the Serbian scored against Monza in the Silvio Berlusconi Trophy, it felt like Jovic’s stay was much more safe. The words of Fonseca added to the certainty: “He surprised me in these weeks. He’s a player who can help the team a lot in the area. The way he worked these weeks, I really liked him.”

However, the performance against Torino in the first match of the season when he started up front was not satisfactory. It was a golden opportunity to shine in place of the injured Alvaro Morata, but he had just 18 touches and failed to impact the game.

After Noah Okafor also struggled in Parma, Milan found themselves in the unpleasant position of having to reactive the Abraham idea. If Morata, Abraham and Jovic were in the squad, the Serbian would still play even less than last season.

The situation remains to be monitored, but the final few hours of the market could lead to Jovic’s farewell, or alternatively to a stay with little margin for satisfaction.
