Giroud and Theo finish second as Argentina defeat France in dramatic final

By Isak Möller -

It was a very dramatic final, but Leo Messi and Argentina secured the trophy in the end. AC Milan duo Olivier Giroud and Theo Hernandez thus came away with a silver medal each from the tournament.

Argentina looked to be in control of the final, leading 2-0, but then conceded two quick goals late in the second half, courtesy of Kylian Mbappe. It then looked like Messi had secured it, but Mbappe stepped up again to make it 3-3.

In the shootout, Argentina eventually prevailed and thus secured the win. Giroud and Hernandez will feel disappointed as they didn’t have a very good final, but they did really well for France throughout the tournament.

Giroud scored four goals and Hernandez bagged a goal as well as two assists. They will now have a well-deserved vacation before returning to Italy for the resumption of the season, starting with the Salernitana clash on January 4.

  1. sad for giroud, he didnt deserve that early sub. we were so close to having 2 golden medalists at our club. shame, tho the match was spectacular

    1. What? He was invisible, how many times did he touch the ball? Kolo Muani was about 300% better, so the substitute was clearly justified…

      1. Although Giroud would have buried THAT one chance in the last minute as opposite to Kolo.

Dembele – the one who some people think Milan should buy – was absolutely horrible. Without him France could have won it in the regular time but Dembele gifted a penalty and also every time after receiving the ball gave it away immediately.

Also… If France had a certain Magic-Mike in goal Argentina wouldn’t have even made it to the penalties – let along won them. Lloris was absolutely terrible – especially in the penalties. It looked like he was trying to jump away from the ball instead of saving them. Just horrible…

    1. Awesome game but 1st France pk was garbage. Guy had the same contact for many seconds then once in the box opened his mouth, screamed like a baby, and fell over. I’m not surprised but this is the modern game.

Otherwise it was an amazing game. Just wish golden goal was still around.
