Hernandez says ‘Leao and I are good together’ and discusses his preferred Milan system

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez has said that he and Rafael Leao play well together and he offered his thoughts on Milan’s system changes this season.

Speaking during an interview with Prime Video (via Milan News) ahead of the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Napoli. the French defender discussed his Portuguese teammate.

The pair both play on the left if the 4-2-3-1 formation is being used by Pioli and he stressed that they often perform well in that system together.

“Leao and I are good together and we have been playing for a long time. I know what he does and the other way around,” Hernandez explained.

That could be a key area of the pitch for the Diavolo against Napoli and Hernandez admitted that he much prefers to play in the 4-2-3-1 formation rather than the 3-4-2-1 which has been used for much of 2023.

“I feel good in the four-man defence, I prefer to play that way, but it is also true that we played with a five-man line because we couldn’t win these games, but now we are fine,” he explained.

The player he is likely to be dealing with the most on Wednesday at San Siro is Giovanni Di Lorenzo. He said of the Napoli full-back: “A strong player, who knows what he’s doing.”

In reference to the recent 4-0 win over Napoli, Hernandez played down any links between the two games.

“We will play in the way we know, as we have been working hard, the league game is not the same. We have worked well, we have to play well in this very important game tomorrow,” he said.
