Hernandez reveals he thought Pioli was ‘joking’ when making him captain

Theo Hernandez has officially renewed his contract with AC Milan and will remain at the club until at least 2026. Based on the left-back’s own words, he could stay at the club for many years to come.

The No.19 has been a key player for the Rossoneri since he joined for a mere €20m from Real Madrid in 2019. This season, he has four goals and eight assists, most recently providing Olivier Giroud with a nice pass against Lazio.

In the games against Roma, Venezia, Spezia and Genoa, Hernandez was entrusted with the captain’s armband and he repaid the trust with some great performances. Speaking to the club’s official channels (read here), he revealed that he thought Stefano Pioli was joking.

“The coach told me, but I thought he was joking. It was true, I hoped to keep it for even longer,” he stated.

In addition to Hernandez, Milan are also in negotiations to extend the contracts of Ismael Bennacer and Rafael Leao. Renewing these three in relatively quick succession would be a huge success for the Rossoneri.
