Journalist explains why Milan are reluctant to promote Abate: “More risks”

By Isak Möller -

Following the 2-2 draw against Salernitana, Stefano Pioli is on thin ice at AC Milan and could even be replaced before the end of the season. However, as a journalist highlights, the Rossonberi are not keen on promoting Ignazio Abate.

The hypothesis of promoting Primavera manager Abate has been floated around in the media, especially since he has done a very good job. They finished top of their UEFA Youth League group and are just four points behind Inter in the league standings.

Speaking to MilanNews, the Corriere della Sera journalist Carlos Passerini was asked about Abate replacing Pioli as a caretaker. He stated that Milan aren’t too keen on this solution, wanting the 37-year-old to have a natural path to the top.

“There are those who say that Abate could be promoted, but the club’s stance is that there are more risks than potential gains with that option. They also risk burning out a manager who, with the right timing, could be a good manager in the future.

“The point is this: Thiaw, Kalulu and Tomori will not magically recover by changing the manager… Now they need to put a stop to injuries, removing some of Pioli’s staff members,” he stated.

Of course, if Milan were to lose against Sassuolo this Saturday then anything can happen. A lot will also depend on the opinion of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has been a close friend of Abate ever since their time at Milan together.

  1. Pioli should finish out the season. We can still get 4th place with Pioli then we can replace him properly with Motta, Farioli or Italiano.

The real problem is the fitness issue. With a fully fit team we can still qualify for CL and progress to Europa League finals.

So there’s no point in talking about replacing Pioli as there are no better options at the moment and that is not our biggest problem unless Pioli decided to resign if we fire his fitness staff.

Then we would no choice to replace him with an interim manager. If it comes down to that then get Ralf Rangnick. Yes I said it. It would be good to have him as part of our management staff especially for scouting players.

    1. there are a million better options.

The dude lost it. No way are we finishing top4 with him in charge. No way no how. Last season we closed 5th. REMEMBER THAT?

      1. U prefer to replace a coach mid season with the Primavera coach? Who are the millions of options?.let me hear them.(viable options only pls). I’m off on boxing Day lol

        1. sure, why not. if the currnet one is not getting results, and he is not, fire his a$$ and put whoever in charge. And no im not writting up a million names. look em up yourself

          1. “. if the currnet one is not getting results, and he is not” The current one has us in third place. You guys are a delusional bunch. Probably new fans that haven’t seen football long enough to know this “crisis” of points is fabricated..the crisis of injuries is real

          2. sure, lets wait 5 more rounds for when we are not 3rd anymore & then i get to say i told you soo.

The crisis is in how sh*t Milan plays and how lord baldy has 0 solutions for it for over 2 months

      2. OK so you would rather promote Abate? With zero first team experience?

How many times has the promotion of a primavera coach worked out well at Milan (not named Capello)?

This would be, as you call it, “DELUSIONAL AF”

Leave Abate alone and let him work with the kids.

        1. if he wants it why now?

You’re the delusional one. The amout of rubbish i see from you so called fans is borderline torture.

          1. “you so called fans”? What does that even mean? Is there a blue print here?

You must be glutton for punishment then, since you’re on here every day 😉 Don’t lie… You know you like it…. LOL!!!

Abate, if he’s smart, doesn’t want it. But if they ask him to take the job, can he really say no?? I hope he does. just because he does well with the primavera, doesn’t mean it would translate to the senior team.

If it’s between Pioli and Abate, I’d rather take my chances with the bald guy.

  2. I think if we lose to Sassuolo the sacking would be necessary, but Abate isn’t the right option as of now. There are many other good options we can try getting instead of Abate, who is doing well with the Primavera and should focus on that.

    1. One game doesn’t decide anything. Pioli should have been upgraded on last season. The Sassuolo thing is just something media came up with for headlines.

Now is just a waiting game to see if there’s someone available to take over the team now worth a damn, or if we have to wait ’till the summer.

      1. I don’t follow that media crap.
        Here’s my reasoning for this,
If we lose to Sassuolo we will be at 33 points in 18 game. The other teams which are below us are Bologna and Florentina, who will have to play Udinese and Torino, which they might win. Let’s just say if this happens, then we will be out of the top 4.

  3. Have you all forgotten pioli is a cat with nine life’s many of you hoping we lose against sassuolo so he could be fired am sorry to disappoint you all because we will win that match convincingly and pioli sacking will shift further away hahahaha pioli the magician

  4. i’m nervous about the back line against Sassuolo. Simic and Kjaer haven’t played together before. I don’t know what or pioli will have to line up at the back. Poor guy is gonna need a reaction. A statement win is probably out of the question given we’re decimated at the back…

I don’t envy him to be honest.
