Kjaer ‘very happy’ with comeback and reveals he was ‘surprised’ by Sassuolo tactic

By Isak Möller -

Simon Kjaer made his first start for AC Milan since December of last year this evening as the Rossoneri faced Sassuolo away from home. Although it ended in a disappointing draw, the Dane did well.

The veteran centre-back made his first appearance of the season tonight after previously featuring during the pre-season. Stefano Pioli gave him the chance from start due to the right schedule and it was thus his first official appearance since the injury.

Speaking to DAZN after the game, as cited by MilanNews, Kjaer stated that he felt fine on the pitch but also made it clear that the result is unacceptable. He also sent a message to Sassuolo captain Domenico Berardi, who sustained an injury during the game.

On the return…

“270 days is a long time, a lot of work, a lot of sacrifices and I’m very happy to be back and to have given a hand.”

How is he…

“I’m fine, but let’s say that I haven’t had this feeling since I was 24. Managing yourself is more difficult, but I felt very good in all parts of the game. I asked for the substitution in order to not risk anything.”

On the match…

“Obviously we had to win. We did better than them but it’s a surprise that Sassuolo played like this, with everyone behind the ball and happy with a point. We lacked something in the final third and we have to work on that.”

On what Milan need to improve…

“We worked hard to take advantage of the depth of the players we have. We still need to read the game and manage our play better. They defended very well, being 11 behind the ball. We must have the same hunger and the same attitude as last year.”

On Berardi…

“When you spend so much time away, you never want someone to get hurt. We want all the best on the pitch and Berardi is the best.”

Milan will have to forget this game quickly as they will face Inter in the important derby on Saturday evening. It won’t be an easy game and the Rossoneri will have to get their attack going before then.
