A period of introspection has once again started up after AC Milan dropped yet more points in the league last night, drawing 0-0 with Genoa.
La Gazzetta dello Sport recall how Milan won the Scudetto two years ago, then started to slide gradually, but above all the club ‘lost its soul’. The team is not a poor one, some players who arrived since have quality, but the mistakes add up.
Milan have nothing that a strong team needs: it has no leaders, they do not win matches with ruthlessness, they lack strength and personality and the club do not communicate through directors, leaving fans in the dark.
Club choices: This Milan has lost all the love from the fans and never gives the impression of wanting to go in one direction with force. The directors never speak at the end of the difficult evenings, and their decisions when it comes to transfers and the hiring of Paulo Fonseca are beginning to draw criticism. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was even booed last night.
The coach: The fans have no problem with Fonseca and appreciate his honesty, but the coach is a symbol of the crisis. Some fans wanted Antonio Conte because they asked for a winner. Fonseca was not a glamorous name but he has been firm, as he was with Leao and Theo, but draws against Torino, Cagliari and Genoa plus defeats to Parma, Fiorentina, Napoli and Atalanta have weakened his position.
Leaders: Milan lack a group of leaders who know how to carry the team through difficult periods. Leao, yesterday’s captain, is a very strong player but not a leader. Calabria and Theo are in a prolonged rift with the coach, and Reijnders is the same as Leao. Maignan and Morata are candidates, yet even they haven’t been heard from much.
Errors: This season the Rossoneri have conceded many avoidable goals, many copies of previous ones. The only reliable player seems to be Gabbia: Theo is a defensive problem, Emerson Royal is up and down and the centre-back pairing has constantly changed. Fofana and Reijnders must always play and defend for three men.
The attack: It seemed that Milan had no problem scoring goals, yet in eight league games out of 15 the team have not scored more than one goal. Against Genoa they were ‘trying to open a lock with a bunch of wrong keys’, and Morata’s missed chances were glaring. He and Abraham have a combined six league goals, while Retegui at Atalanta has double.
What next? Milan will play on December 29 against Roma to close the year, and paradoxically it is probably an advantage given the protests that would take place. RedBird have a vendor loan to be repaid by August 31 to Elliott Management but in the meantime, there is one reasonable certainty: Cardinale will not talk about Milan in the coming weeks.
honestly don’t even think fonsecas the problem at this point. the club has no leadership and ripped its heart out by firing maldini. that stems from gerry. as far as transfers? also disastrous. we’ve given juve, atalanta, and fiorentina our stars and signed players who are worse. saelemakers is better than chukwueze and okafor. maldini (jr) even made the national team.
pathetic milan. pathetic gerry.
You summed it all Andrea, it not the coach only the problem although he is very important element.
It’s top management and zlatan inexperince in handling such role. Sacking Maldini was a clear evidence of new management not understanding European football and specially Italian.
All decision were made after that was wrong from its base. Not real leadership from top to bottom including below par coach. Snow ball effect is increasing its damage to club root. Both zlatan and Fonseca should be out for a top proven track record manager and coach immediately.
The mistake in management is done let’s focus on how to get a better Acmilan were proud of Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not Acmilan problem. What Acmilan will do restore the team is focus extra more training on the pressing system we need to change the pattern of counter attack is not Acmilan method of playing. Out method of the 4-2-3-1 that haves us league title last two seasons is the pressing system, pressing the opponent in their half field to score more goals and to revive us is the only way and we can adapt to it in training. Jimenez is Good but Acmilan should bring Theo back Emerson is a waste for us.
I would change all, starting from the couch, ending up with the owner. Players are not to be blamed at the moment as it is quite evident that they are not managed well. Theo is the problem ? while Emerson Rojal deserves a starting place game in game out. For Theo do be effective in attack you must have a good protection, end because Emerson can not provide that we seem to be playing on the right with Emerson and Cukwatze wasting good position every now and then. I mean, we new already when Fonseca was appointed, it would have been surprise if he did good.
Everything that’s wrong starts at the top. That’s the core of the problem. Everything else you see is a side effect. Like a symptom.
Treat the core problem. Not the symptoms.
This. Changing the coach won’t fix the main issue.
Last year, Pioli finished season with defeats. I think 5 or six games in a row Milan couldnt won.
So this crises started from moment when Milan lost against Roma in Europe League.
Unfortunatelly, owner did not recognize that, so hi will pay price from next year.
What is wrong with the current Milan ?
Yes, the answer is yes.
or massive.
I said as much all the way back in the summer. The team was poorly built even if money went into the team. Seems like when we had money we didn’t know what to do with it. We’re better off being poor lol. I recalled ppl losing their minds over the best transfer window in a decade last summer and couldn’t help but think why dismantle a whole team who showed promising signs for winning things. Seems like so long ago now smh
