Longo: Mutual respect ‘strengthened’ as Calabria and Pioli put controversy to bed

By Isak Möller -

Davide Calabria’s post-match words and above all the response from Stefano Pioli sparked some controversy after AC Milan’s 3-0 defeat to PSG. However, the two parties cleared the misunderstanding immediately, a report claims.

After the game, which was disappointing to say the least for the Rossoneri, Calabria was very honest in his post-match interview. He admitted that there was both a ‘tactical and mental problem’, and also stated that ‘those you don’t believe in it can stay at home’.

Pioli wasn’t too happy with the words, defending the captain by saying that players often lack clarity immediately after a game, but also making it clear that full-back ‘was wrong’. As reported by Daniele Longo of Calciomercato.com, the two have already moved on from the incident.

They spoke to each other afterwards and as a result, the mutual respect was ‘strengthened’. In other words, there was no controversy but simply a misunderstanding and Milan are already focused on the clash against Napoli on Sunday.

  1. I fail to see what was wrong with Calabria’s original set of comments other than that it looked a bit bad on the coach if you interpret it one way. But clearly the next set of sentences Calabria spoke was about players not being ready. And he was frustrated. It’s basically sport.

    1. Is there a possibility some players don’t all agree with Pioli, and Calabria being the Captain rather than join that group decides to kind of call the situation out?

Pioli, while trying to hide the situation – because I’m sure if that’s the situation, he can sense it – doesn’t want to talk about while hoping he can wing it.

Maybe I think too much, but I think the team is divided from that statement attributed to Calabria; “…those who don’t believe in it can stay at home” is pregnant with meaning.

I suspect some senior players – it can’t be the new players – are not entirely happy. Wild guess: Leao? Theo? Tomori? Kjaer? Maignan? Giroud? Kalulu?

It’s just a wild guess and there’s no proof that this is the situation. Or that any of these players habour this sentiments.

      1. “Maybe I think too much, but I think the team is divided from that statement attributed to Calabria; “…those who don’t believe in it can stay at home” is pregnant with meaning.” Bro this right here. Pregnant in meaning indeed. Seems like some haven’t bought into Pioli’s game plans 🤔
        Nice catch

  2. Hi,
Can you guys list all the possible ways that Milan can qualify to the round of 16, including head to head ,goal difference and other tiebreakers. Keep up the excellent work too!

  3. This right here is what a captain should be saying. He’s there everyday he sees there’s a tactical and mental problem, so as captain why can’t he speak out? It actually bothers me that pioli took offence to those words because Calabria sees somethings not right and pioli is trying to hush him. Pioli’s stubbornness is going to kill us this season

  4. If you keep doing things the same, and it is not working, you have to change your approach. Tactically, in the big games, Pioli has been disappointing. Another fear for me, after the summer transfer ended, was, Pioli pushing Krunic on the team. He’s just coming back from injury, and was really poor in the last game, still, the coach used him at the heart of the midfield against PSG. You cannot force a player on a team, especially, if the player is not doing well. I fear for Pioli, with the way things are going.

  5. The coach is wasting time, unless they move Plusik to the left wing. It’s unbelievable that Leaou is so ineffective on the left. Most of the time, he doesn’t even run. He expects his teammates to put the ball in front of him that he could kick, which he missed doing it twice when Plusik did that. On the other hand, you have to be blind not to see that poor Plusik keeps moving up and down the field, and to the left, which is his real position. As for Giroud; lm sorry to say that, he can’t function anymore as a center forward. Therefore, you can not WIN a match when you have 2 out of 3 players on goal scoring positions, and the defense having so many mistakes.
