Mandzukic sends message to Juventus during Milan unveiling: “On the pitch we are rivals”

By Oliver Fisher -

New signing Mario Mandzukic has insisted that revenge on former club Juventus was not on his mind when agreeing to join AC Milan.

On Tuesday, the Rossoneri confirmed the signing of the Croatian forward on a deal until the end of the current season with an option to extend the contract for the 2021-22 season.

Mandzukic has had a decorated career having played and won trophies in multiple countries, appearing for VfL Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Juventus. It is perhaps his spell with the Bianconeri that he is best know for as he played 162 games and scored 44 goals.

Mandzukic spoke in front of the media at Milanello during his official unveiling and answered a number of different questions from journalists, with his words regarding Juventus transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

How will it be for you to face Juventus as an opponent?

“It will be like facing all the other matches. On the pitch we are rivals, then off we are still friends. I hope to see the fans at the stadium again soon. I have always had a good relationship with the Juventus fans, I will respect them forever, but now I will fight for Milan and its fans. Sarri? I don’t like talking about the past, I only want to think about the present at Milan.”

Did you also come to Milan to prove to Juventus that they were wrong to let you go?

“No. When Milan called me I only thought about meeting the expectations that the Rossoneri have towards me.”
