Mediaset: Former River Plate boss intrigues Milan with Pioli’s stay not certain

By Oliver Fisher -

There has been a lot of talk about Stefano Pioli’s AC Milan future recently, and a report has claimed that the management have someone lined up in the event he leaves.

It was recently reported by Sky that Pioli is likely to remain in charge beyond the end of the current season because of the results that he has obtained so far in 2024 which have strengthened the trust of the management.

President Paolo Scaroni spoke on Sky before last Saturday’s match against Fiorentina and he made his thoughts clear on the club’s plan for the head coach role.

“I have always said that Pioli will stay, because I like coaches who win and, since we are doing well, I like Pioli. Apart from the fact that he is a fantastic person, we are all fond of him and he is fond of us,” he said.

However, SportMediaset (via MilanNews) report that Pioli’s future with the Rossoneri could still be in question due to the interest of several clubs – Napoli above all – and the carousel of coaches that is expected to happen in the summer.

In addition that that, there are some crucial games between now and June. Losses in the derby and against Juventus in Serie A plus a Europa League exit at the hands of Roma would be disastrous and might force reflections.

If his farewell were to become reality, Milan seem to have Marcelo Gallardo at the top of their list, the former River Plate coach now in charge of Karim Benzema’s Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

    1. CJ, you’re right. Anything that doesn’t come from ‘la bocca di Francesco Romani’ regarding player transfers I ignore.

      1. Anything that isn’t an official club communication is to be considered nothing but an opinion or rumor, if not clickbait. Simple as that.

    2. I live in Argentina. Marcelo Gallardo was without any doubt the best and most successful manager in Argentina and South America in the last ten years. His River Plate won all the trophies available in South America and only lost the world Cup against the winners of Champions League. His River played a wonderful football and was very balanced altogether. He launched several young players. Ask Enzo Fermandez and Julian Alvarez.

      1. Yes gianfranco I agree Gallardo looks to potentially be an exceptional manager. Is he ready for Milan? We’ll only know if he took the job..

But as much as I’d like him to get the opportunity this seems like a clickbait headline. Not sure he’s keen to leave the riches of Saudi quite yet.

      2. Thanks for the background. Took this from click bait to something of mild interest.

I do wonder why the article doesn’t offer more of this background to begin with?

  1. Galardo is th3 best suited coach he overtaken arricho Zacci,Fabio Cabeelo,Carlo Ancellotti combined togather interms of Trophs.
If he is given the Mission and Mandate

  2. Anyone that watches South American soccer knows that this guy is an absolute genius at coaching this sport. His tactics would fit the playstyles of these player perfectly – but this article is propbably just for clicks lol

    1. I haven’t followed South American football, but he seems to have won only one championship (Primera Division) in all the time (8 years) with River.

Also looked at the final for Libertadores in 2015 and saw that River apparently had Vangioni and Viudez 😮

Zeman was also a genius, Tabarez was also a genius, Bielsa was also a genius. Some might say Gasperini is a genius. Are they the right coach for us. The answer is no.

      1. Ancelotti only 1 one for us also. I understand the reservationa on Gallardo. Either way he’s making way too much $ to coach our team.
