Milan loanee Colombo says he would ‘prefer to return’ later rather than sooner

Empoli have been a big surprise at the start of this season, not losing a single game, and the AC Milan loanee Lorenzo Colombo has been an important part of this. When asked during an interview, he dropped some hints regarding his future.

Following a positive pre-season with Milan, the decision was eventually made to send Colombo out on loan. The idea was that there wouldn’t be room for the Italian, which ended up being true as Tammy Abraham was signed on deadline day.

In any case, Colombo has started his loan spell at Empoli very well with three goals and one assist in seven appearances. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport ahead of the game against Fiorentina tomorrow, as cited by MilanNews, the striker discussed the future.

You are very hungry and it shows…

“That hunger is the same I had as a kid, I always have it. I have a goal in mind and I have always worked with that in mind.”

Does it have anything to do with the Rossoneri?

“Let’s say I have many goals. Milan is always in my head.”

So it’s about the Azzurri, not only Empoli but also the national team…

“It could be…”

And speaking of Milan: this is the third loan in Serie A. Did you expect it to be the year to really show the Rossoneri that you deserve a chance?

“The truth is that I still have to grow, make mistakes and above all play. The level of Milan is very high and I can only get there through the path I’m taking. I prefer to return when I’m more ready and make the most of the next opportunity.”

It should be noted that according to reports, Empoli have the option to make the deal permanent at the end of the current season. Furthermore, Milan don’t have a buy-back class as they did when Colombo joined Lecce a few years back.

It remains to be seen what the exact figures are for the buy-out clause, but one would imagine that they are a bit higher since Milan don’t have a buy-back clause.

  1. Lorenzo Colombo is on loan and Milan should not make any mistake in selling him out because is a future Milan striker, he had a good preseason along with Chukwueze as both had a great combination.

    1. The balls is not on our hand though, he is gone through on loan with option to buy set, so if Empoli want to buy him with full amount as the option set, we cant do anything.

      Im happy for the lad though, no matter if his career will be at Milan or anywhere else, as long as he got decent career. He is decent lad.

  2. Perfect as a Jovic replacement! Chukwueze can also be replaced with Saelemakers if he can’t develop this season.

    RLC -> J.David
    Bennacer -> Ricci
    Calabria -> Kayode

  3. Scored a handful of goals (3) and people act like he’s a grade a bomber bagging 33G a season. He isn’t..he in fact is at Empoli for a reason..the reason being? Work it out

    1. The reason being, he is a young striker with lots of potential.
      He is blessed with a wonderful left foot.
      As is the case with big guys like him, they need time to develop

      1. Meh. I’m sure he has quality, but if I need to pick between Abraham for the next 5 years or Colombo it isn’t even a slither of doubt who’d I prefer.
        Colombo might bloom or he might not.

          1. No I’m not. I’m comparing strikers. Sure one of them has more experience but that’s the fúcking point.. thought that was obvious.

          2. So you agree he should stay at Empoli and stay away from Milan. And no my point wasn’t that he was overrated. Did I write that? I don’t see it.

          3. Yes he should stay in Empoli on loan to get regular playing time, not to be sold tho. Just look at Gabia at 24 now.
            “And no my point wasn’t that he was overrated.” Well it sure seemed like it in your first comment.

          4. Gabbia has been this good for around 3 years now.. Colombo is just meh.

            Ofc it seemed like i was writting that, you’re just an regular Joe who couldnt interpret a Franklin the Turtle book let alone a simple comment from a simple flyingturtle.

            If anything is taken from my first commet is that people are overrating him not that he is overrated. 2 very distinctive things

        1. You can have both… we are gonna be needing some after starting to use 4-4-2, anyways

          Colombo as Abraham/J.David (he can also play Morata’s role) understudy and Morata as support…

          You will need less midfielders as well, now you just need one after Bennacer sale… but if we keep 4-2-3-1, you need to bring minimum 2 midfielders and an upgrade over RLC…

          J.David, Tammy (permanent), Colombo (return)… Tammy is under-20M and the others are free (free agent J.David, better if we get him in Januray, but imagine Gerry spending money)

        1. Please bear in mind, the ownership does not want to spend 60 – 70m on a top young forward, so we need to develop one.

          We currently have Morata signed on a long contract but he is 32yo
          Abraham is a dry loan
          Jovic on a 1 year deal and will surely leave

          So “our best strikers” = Morata

  4. I feel for lad. He is forging his life in a very cutthroat and demanding career that will only last for a very short time. Many don’t make it at all. He’s got the right attitude. Humble but assertive. Plus it would do Milan well to manufacture more credible home grown talents.

  5. Its all these exciting guys. But Milan needs to start sell them.

    Pobega, Maldini, Simic, Colombo, Nasti, and for now only Gabbia managed to show high performance.

    Milan must sell youngsters for as much possible, to invest money later on strong first team.

    Of course, we need some like Gabbia to compete with players like Tomori and Pavlovic

  6. Sell youth? if Liberalli, Camarda, Bartesaghi, Jimenez, Zeroli, Vos, Scotil, Sia, Magni leave what was the point?

    We aren’t spending on anyone and we have 6 Italians… 2 will leave in the summer as things stand
