AC Milan defender Davide Calabria has said that the club are expecting great things in the Champions League this season.
Speaking during an interview with Sky Sport Italia on the night before the match against RB Salzburg (via Milan News), Calabria spoke very confidently about what the Rossoneri can hope to achieve in the Champions League this season.
They are taking on RB Salzburg in their first game of the group stage in Austria on Tuesday evening. Calabria talked about it being the second consecutive season in the tournament.
“Surely we have more experience. Last year was one of the most difficult rounds in history. This year we have more minutes. We expect great things, we can’t wait to start,” he said.
He was also quizzed about the 3-2 win over Inter in Serie A on Saturday and much like Stefano Pioli did in his press conference, he focused on putting that match in the past and looking at the Salzburg game.
“I would say the derby is gone. We definitely keep the positive energy. It’s always a different game from the others, the win was deserved. Now there’s the Champions League so let’s think about this match,” Calabria said.
He feels that Milan play a modern brand of football these days under Pioli, saying: “It’s modern football, we like it, very offensive, we like to go in pressing. It’s a type of football that already exists in Europe. It’s a game we know by heart, we’ve been doing well in the league for years.”
On the new signings and how they have bedded into the squad: “They are all young lads who want to show themselves. They are all ready, they will give us a big hand.
“Obviously it takes time to acclimatise in a new country and with a new language. I found them all to be very proactive.”
On the importance of Zlatan Ibrahimovic: “Zlatan is with us when he can. He’s part of the team, he’s going through quite a serious injury.
“He always comes to the stadium, he had a period of therapy away from us at the beginning, now he’s spending more and more time with us.
“He is an important presence for us, he has been important in the past months and will be important in the coming months.”
