CorSport: Leao is Milan’s most powerful weapon but he desperately needs support

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli will be hoping for more contributions from the rest of the attack in the coming rounds given Rafael Leao is the only consistent player at the moment.

This morning’s edition of il Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) reports how Pioli will again rely on Leao against Napoli and in the games after, which is natural because the Portuguese international has become the ‘most powerful weapon’ available to the coach.

The rest of the attacking department are really struggling. Brahim Diaz hasn’t scored in months, Junior Messias and Alexis Saelemaekers never fully convince enough to offer a threat from the right side, while Ante Rebic is struggling to find himself after the many physical problems he has had this season.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic still in the pits and Olivier Giroud now four games without a goal, no one can really make a difference in Milan’s attack except Leao. The bottom line is that he needs support.

  1. We need to play with a false 9 to partner with leao 4-2-3-1 doesnt work if the main striker is not delivering

  2. Literally, had Theo been effortlessly effective, Leao would do less defending than he does at the moment, and this will give him enough energy to bask towards the opponent.

As it stands, Rebic could have been the best option for a false 9 but, I don’t know why Pioli has not given him that opportunity lately.

Also, why can’t Pioli adopt Messias to the CAM position in the mean time

  3. Well said. I like the idea of trying Messias in the CAM. His final passes are way better than Diaz and playing both him and Salameakers together might yield some good fruits
