Milan president Scaroni: “The stadium is a fundamental element for our virtuous path”

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni has said that the new stadium is fundamental for Milan in the path they have taken.

The president spoke to Corriere della Sera about the long fight to get Milan into a new stadium that can provide more financial backing than the current San Siro stadium does.

Scaroni explained that with the urgency that Milan are now working at to grow and become a more dominant force in Europe, having a new stadium is fundamental.

“For us, time is a value. We have such an urgency to have a structure adequate to our ambitions that the first project that becomes feasible will be the one that attracts us the most.

“I speak only for a moment for Milan: we have won the Scudetto, we have sorted out the accounts, the stadium is a fundamental element for our virtuous path.”

Milan and Inter have been trying for a very long time to knock down the existing San Siro stadium and build a new one which can function in a more lucrative way for both clubs.

Scaroni discussed the fact that they knew there were procedures and costs involved in this but it has proved too much to deal with.

“We have been pursuing the San Siro project for years, it has always been our first choice.

“We have pursued it with obstinacy, investing a lot of money, aware that a project of this size and in that area of the city requires a certain authorisation process that has specific times and procedures, some of which we did not imagine, to tell the truth, or we thought could be overcome, but it is clear that if there are rules, they must be followed.”

The public debate is ongoing and if it is concluded quickly there is still hope for the original project to go ahead.

“We and Inter continue with that project and our team met just yesterday with the coordinator of the public debate: we have hired a consulting firm to help us prepare it.

“We hope to conclude the public debate, then there will be the appeals to the Tar: if all goes well by the end of the year we could have concluded this phase.”
