MN: Thorny renewal and the competition with Diaz – Calhanoglu’s future at Milan

By Isak Möller -

Hakan Calhanoglu’s performance against Hellas Verona reminded us of some of his old games, those before 2020, when the No.10 was really struggling. The final touch was missing and there is some cause for concern.

The midfielder was decisive until mid-October, when he injured his ankle, which inevitable has affected his performances. Stefano Pioli has rested him in Europa League, giving playing time to Brahim Diaz, who has been successful lately.

As highlighted by MilanNews.it, the Spanish playmaker had the clarity – in injury time – to pick out Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the 2-2 goal against Verona. Real Madrid, who own the player, are delighted with his performances thus far.

That being said, few would have predicted that the No.21 could become a serious contender for Calhanoglu’s spot, but it seems we are heading that way. As a result of this, the future of the Turk becomes even more interesting.

His contract will expire next summer and Paolo Maldini has already made it know that Milan want to keep him. Losing Calhanoglu on a free transfer would be a big shame, also because they need resources to replace him.

Parallel to this situation, it’s also necessary to start talks with Real Madrid over Brahim Diaz Milan could try to buy him or extend the loan (and include a buy-out option), also protecting themselves from any Calhanoglu mishap.
