Pellegatti explains what the ‘Milan fans fear’ regarding potential Tonali sale

Journalist Carlo Pellegatti has highlighted what he believes to be the ‘fear’ that AC Milan fans have when it comes to the possible sale of Sandro Tonali.

News exploded late last night regarding Newcastle United’s attempt to sign Tonali. MilanNews reported that their interest in Tonali very concrete and that they had put forward a bid worth €60m while offering a big pay rise to the player.

The most recent update from Calciomercato.com stated that Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani have rejected that bid and are asking for €80m to even consider a sale, while a lot will depend on the midfielder’s willingness to actually leave his boyhood club.

Pellegatti spoke during the radio show Tutti Convocati on Radio 24 about the rumours surrounding Tonali and a potential move to the north of England, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“Is 65 million a lot for Tonali? Yes, but 80 million is a lot for Maignan, 80 for Theo Hernandez, 100 for Leao. The Milan fans fear that if it is enough for a club to bring an offer and Milan are always available to talk about it, we could lose others,” he said.

  1. Yeah plan is to sell everyone for 400m, take the money and sell Milan and make a 400m loss next season

10/10 business decision that totally will happen according to everyone here lmao.

  2. Tonali are milanista , italiano and love AC Milan since child . He is future captain for AC Milan . I hope he stay but i will respect his choice too if he choose newcastle . Decision on tonali hands now .

  3. That is not it at all.

Fans are fully aware that Theo, Leao, Mike, Isma, Tomori will all eventually go. They are not Italian, they are not born and raised Milanisti.

But Tonali is, he is literally the symbol of this new Milan, he is supposed to be the future captain, someone that lives and breathes Milan and that will retire at Milan. And if he leaves, well nothing is then sacred. Milan as we remember it no longer exists.

    1. Milan as we remeber it hasnt exited since around 10/11. If people refuse to accept that, that is their problem. I’d rather see Milan sell players and fight for top 4, in a not that convicing cycle, than whatever we can call 2012-2020..

    2. Exactly. Spot on, tonali is the type of player we have missed ever since players like nesta, ambrosini, gattuso, Maldini all left. Cares more for the colors than to go to another team and you want to get rid of him? How does that look from a fans perspective? You’re willing to let a true milanista go so why should we ever trust that we can keep any player that comes in. If I hear ‘moneyball’ one more time I might go crazy. I legit want to shut off anything that has to do with milan and just tune into their first season game and see what has happened. This news I hear every day is making me sick

    3. “Milan as we remember it no longer exists.”

Well… Kaká was sold, Shevchecko was sold, Gullit was sold back in the days and more recently Zlatan & T.Silva etc. Milan has always sold players. Even fan favorites. As long as it stops at Tonali everything’s fine. There is no need to sell others because of the huge profit of Tonali’s sale.

  4. Let’s be honest that it is a business that is being ran by Red Bird and the fact that we have lost money on Donnarumma, Kessie, and Calhanoglu is partial reason why the investments back in the club are not what we expect as fans. Part of any club that is successful and ran with positive cash flow is to invest low and sell high while producing a winner on the field.

With Serie A suffering from TV deals and stadiums that are owned by the cities/provinces rather than the clubs themselves, that revenue is no match to that of EPL or bigger clubs with money back by Middle Eastern Princes. While no one wants to lose players, it is also a responsibility of the club to recognize that they cannot afford to pay salaries exceeding €7M net until you have positive cash flows that come from stadium deals and sponsorships. If they do lose Tonali, then the best course is to collect as much as they can from him and reinvest back into the players to fill his role.

€80M and you can bring in 2-3 players that fill necessary holes would be a great coup for this club and hate to see players move on.

    1. I mean I would rather give up Leao or Maignan than Tonali. But Milan is a club like that now, who cares who is a fan and anything else. Just money.

      1. Exaclty – ZERO indication at ALL of that Tonali money will be reinvested back in the club. I will believe it when I see it. And Frattesi is NOT better than Tonali. Step backwards

  5. Sell him and lets get a real quality starting midfielder. Our midfield was our biggest weakness this season since losing Kessie. Tonali as an every game starter just isnt good enough. If they can get that much for him they should sell.

  6. The writer has a point. The team is fragile right now, with some uncertainty after Maldini’s dismissal. There will be a run on the club… with the floodgates wide open if Tonali leaves. He is more attached to the colours than a Leao or Maignan. If the big spenders see an opening they will destabilize the team with all sort of lucrative offers for our best players. Not ideal. Especially with our low salary cap

  7. I like Tonali but I wouldn’t pay 70 m for him. He isn’t that good. If we can get that money for him I think we should. And then bring him back in 5 years for free when he’s even better :p

    1. Tonali isn’t that good because of pioli. Every game he has him playing one game attacking, one game defensive, another box to box. Every game against any opponeny tonali is first on the list for distance covered by a whole kilometre!! Pioli is making him run like a chicken with his head cut off where if he gave him a pirlo type role the kid would be sensational

  8. I think they sack maldini ,so they could sell players. I bet you Maldini wouldn’t allow Milan’s best players be sold.

  9. actually its good bussiness if NU pay tonali for 80 mil
rather than Frattesi why not buy Amrabat the cost actually lower than Frattesi, had same position with Tonali n experienced too
    than get SMS 20 mil
sign Kamada n Thuram for free
move CDK to right wing, alexis as second option
    get another CM
maybe Jorginho (Italian and 1 year contract expiring)

    1. So… From “letting people leave for free” to feeder club before even one player has been officially sold. I’m impressed! 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
