It feels like a while since Pietro Pellegri was at AC Milan, but this evening he hopes to provide a reminder of why the club decided to sign him in 2021.

Calciomercato.com write how at 23 years of age Pellegri is finally finding some consistency. He has never lacked talent; injuries – unfortunately – have been the constant of his career and have hampered his development.

That is until now, because the striker seems in much better shape and has scored in three consecutive games with Empoli against Lecce, Como and Udinese. He has already set a personal record for goals in a season: before this year he had never scored more than twice in a single campaign.

Pellegri scored at the Stadio Olimpico on the day Totti said goodbye to football. After two minutes he put Genoa ahead, scoring his first goal in Serie A at 16 years and 72 days old. After launching himself with the Rossoblu he went to Monaco, then Milan, Torino and this year Empoli.

He didn’t leave a great memory in a red and black shirt, making just six appearances in the 2021-22 campaign, but today he faces Fonseca’s team as a former player and is already fired up. “Obviously I will try to score again and punish them,” he said.

According to Trasfermarkt data, Pellegri has been out for more than 1000 days due to injuries in his career: the longest was during his time at Monaco, when he was out for over 200 days due to a groin problem.

Now that long trail of absences seems to be over, the striker has put it behind him and he gave a spiky response to those who ask him about his constant physical problems.

“I’m tired of being labelled as the one who always gets hurt. That’s not the case. I’ve never had particularly serious injuries, but muscular problems. All of us footballers work by stressing our bodies every day and we all get injuries and setbacks,” he said.

The centre-forward has previously stated that joining Milan was a mistake and he wished he had picked the other club (unnamed) who were in for him at the time. However, he backtracked on these words in recent days, describing it as an ‘educational’ experience.
