Photo: Milan’s tactics wrong from the start as Pioli played into Inter’s hands

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan were convincingly beaten by Inter in the Derby della Madonnina last night, as the Nerazzurri prevailed 5-1 in the end. Stefano Pioli has been heavily criticised for his tactics and one can understand why.

The Rossoneri struggled to keep up with the counter-attacks of Inter and also failed to break down the compact Simone Inzaghi side. The inverted full-back solution, in that sense, only seemed to do more harm than good.

As highlighted by Scout7Calcio on Twitter, Milan’s tactics played into the hands of Inter as the latter didn’t have to change their formation to pick up the players. Davide Calabria was quickly picked up in the middle and would have done more good by stretching the game on the right flank instead.

  1. Yes Pioli is stupid boy.

He lost so many games on high difference so this year he should learn at least 2 or 3 tactics and not just sticking with 1.

If we lost 2 1 in derby feeling would be different but 5 1, 20 years ago that was reason for sacking the coach.

Now we are in same position like last year where we was beaten 4 or 5 games I the row with big differences. All because Pioli thinks he can do what he imagine and not adopt regularly for each game.

  2. Already facing them 4 times with losing in row and their normal tactic just 352 waiting counter atack because their wing back and striker have fast speed. Pioli never learn something from that 4 defeat. If Sarri was sacked by lazio , better gery sack pioli and hiring Sarri. Losing 5-1 on derby are unacceptable , that score affect team mentality for next match . I hope they dont lose vs Newcastle in tuesday

  3. Tactics were beyond bad. But what are those midfielders doing so close to the players. The whole point is to move to open the space to get the ball. Even though, when they got the ball it was nothing, so same thing. If we had some better players, they could have easily got past the first Inter player and create some space. Player like Kovacic would have the best game of his career with pressing like this, he would be out of the block with the ball in no time. He was interested in joining Milan but we targeted RLC from Chelsea at that time. I thought Maldini got drunk when that article was out but the new management did the same…

  4. Pioli should have matched Inter’s formation and thus play man to man (kinda like what Germany did to Conte’s Italy in the euros because they were afraid of the 352). Or add 1 more to the midfield to make it 6 so we have midfield superiority. It’s where we’ve been outpowered the last 5 times. Inzaghi plays that 532 but one of two things happen, Latauro comes back to help in midfield or the wing backs push up to create superiority in midfield or go deep to create a line of 5 in defence. This nullifys anything we have on the wings forcing us to play a narrow middle centric game. Unfortunately we don’t have enough in midfield and so we run into walls the whole time.

  5. It was clear to see on TV how mashing our fullback into the middle just played into Inter’s hands. They literally didn’t have to adjust their 5-3-2 one iota to mark our players. It was like a fishing asking the shark if it could swim into the its mouth. Pioli is a dumb@ss. He’s had a good ride at Milan. Time to refresh the manager.

  6. Devil’s advocate:

This loss stings, A LOT. But at the end of the day it’s just 3points. Still a long season to go and I think Pioli should get till the end of season for a review. We need to pick up points against the teams we have no business dropping points to, like we did last season.

With Inter in the form they are in, it is impossible to talk of Scudetto. BUT this season can still remain on course, and the Derby loss should burn like an ulcer so that it doesn’t happen again.

Let’s hope we do better in Europe. If we crash out of the group, Pioli is gone.

  7. That joker aka Pioli, should adapt 4-2-3-1 formation instead of that stupid one. He has player can technically apply tremendous pressure on Inter with such formation

  8. As I have said in previous posts: Pioli is the problem. Period. He cannot adjust to IN-GAME tactics. He never has and seems like he never will. Inzaghi had our inverted RB system figured out which was obvious in the first 5 min – yet Pioli didn’t change until he took Calabria off on the 77th min with the game already decided. To top it off he actually said the first 70min were positive??? That is simply not true. We were overrun in the mid. It’s fine for Reinjders and RLC to attack but they also must defend and they got got on several counters w Inter mids breaking the lines for goals. We were out-coached pure and simple. The issue is IN GAME tactics that he cannot adapt to and that is a serious problem against better teams and coaches. Without it we will never take that next step to becoming an elite club.

    1. You’re right. The second goal should have been a warning sign that we can’t keep up in transition – we don’t have the defense for it. I’ve said this all along. Inter basically flooded the midfield and our three man mid couldn’t keep up. Calabria is no mid, he’s not very good at RB either – not sure why he stayed so long.

Pioli had to sit back and throw in extra mid’s to stifle Inter’s stellar midfield. Instead, he did what he did.

“Why should our tactics change?” FFS, Stefano….

  9. Spot on. Inter will always have numerical advantage with their 5 midfielders. Dumfries and DiMarco are attacking fullbacks, covering both offense down the wings and defense when under attack (Inter is covered all the way) making them crowd out spaces for any opposition. And to attack them thru the middle is going to be pointless. Our sluggish build up attacks gave them ample time to regroup rendering our play in the last 3rd non existent. Pioli should have figured this out by now….Capello once said that everytime Milan lose the ball there is a shot on target and Inter showed just that. So our poor defensive discipline is our biggest weakness, not sure if our midfield is adding to the problem but there is serious work to be done. If we have to deal with nunerous shots on goal by every team we play I am afraid we are going backwards, even with the best mercato in recent years. Warming lights are flashing.

      1. Yeah any google of “Manchester City 1 Inter Milan 0: Champions League final tactics” but perticularly the one from the coaches voice…would should you the basic changes starting with changing the box to a diamond.

And exactly as you noted, having Ake, Dias and Akanji being the 3 in the back if you get by Rodri….bulkier….

  10. Is this first time
Pioli is idiot if he was listening to Maldini
    He could go too far
Now he will go as far as he went at inter , lacio , fiorentina

  11. Pioli go back to your formation 4-2-3-1 because we are not used to 4-3-3 even Loftus has not yet mature as a midfielder so Pioli do the needful

  12. Formation or tactics had nothing to do with our losses against inter. I stopped watching after the first goal because it was obvious that we had lost. We are always confident facing other teams but when it comes to inter, we start panicking. Their tactics of scoring in the early stages while our players are still panicking will continue to ensure their victory unless pioli can find a way to inject the right dosage of confidence.

  13. Milan upgraded the team. It’s time we upgraded our coach as well.
This is just a case of a Volkswagen beetle driver given a Bugatti Veyron supersport to drive.
The man’s one way ideology just proved he isn’t top flight.
