Pioli a defeated man with telling ‘this season’ comment on Cardinale’s words

By Isak Möller -

After the 1-0 win against Lazio, Stefano Pioli was asked about the recent words of AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale and his words were pretty telling. Indeed, a parting of ways at the end of the season appears inevitable.

During the Business of Football Summit, Cardinale spoke about the future of Milan and also the current season, stating that both he and Zlatan Ibrahimovic aren’t satisfied. Of course, these words got a lot of attention in Italian media, further fueled after the game last night.

In his interview with DAZN, which you can read in full, Pioli was asked about the comments of Cardinale and his response was pretty telling. He made sure to focus on this season, not giving any indications on next season, while also stating that the owner is free to make his decision.

“I experience the situation with great concentration on what we are doing, trying to make this season positive, we are focused on doing our best possible. I have never commented on the words of the owners, they have the right and the duty to make their own assessments,” he stated.

It seems pretty clear, at least to us, that Pioli is a defeated man already and that a change will happen at the end of the season. In December on our Substack, we spoke about the decision and also highlighted the main candidate for the job, which is Thiago Motta.

  1. Cardinale is being a muppet, we’ve performed up to any realistic expectations. He’s made some good decisions about the future of the club at the start of the right season, but doesn’t have the patience to watch it develop. All the hallmarks of poor ownership chasing instant success and not realising Inter’s season is built on years of development (and ignoring their debts).
