Pioli discusses Chukwueze’s first months at Milan: “I expect more”

By Ben Dixon -

After arriving in the summer, Samuel Chukwueze’s first few months for AC Milan have, unfortunately, been hit and miss. He has shone on occasions but not consistently, and Stefano Pioli offered his thoughts on the Nigerian’s first few months at the club in his pre-match press conference.

There has been a lot to be desired from the winger’s opening months in Milan, especially considering he was the most expensive signing of the summer. Whilst there is, of course, going to be a period of adjustment to life in Milan and Serie A as a league, an improvement is needed domestically, given his impressive performances in the Champions League.

However, there is the benefit of youth. He is only 24 years old and will only get better with time, something which the club are very confident of. With his age, he is young enough to adapt to the league whilst also then having a period before he reaches his ‘prime’.

Ahead of the game against Empoli, Stefano Pioli shared his thoughts about Chukwueze’s opening few months for the Rossoneri. His full comments from his pre-match press conference can be found here.

Chukwueze’s first four months, an opinion…

“I think he’s a new arrival who is having a little more difficulty in getting into our mechanisms, the others have integrated more quickly. He hasn’t had much continuity, he has had two injuries with the national team. Of course, I expect more because I’m convinced of his qualities.”

  1. Chuk just needs more time. He needs to work harder, adapt, and I’m sure his second season will be better than the first. I mean he has already done better than CDK in his first season. And if CDK gets sold then Chuk will have basically come in for free.

  2. At 24 he is in his prime.
While he is certainly capable of better, I don’t see him being a top winger. He is just too 1 dimensional, he is all left foot.
I think trying him as LW or even AM might help

  3. We all expected more from Chukwueze. Especially after moneyball man spent so much money on him. Honestly, Saelemaekers would have more goals, assists and minutes than Chukwueze. and of course, now he’s off in Africa when Milan really needs to turn the ship around. Chukwueze did have a very important goal but needs to be doing that more than once a season.

Reijnders – We also expect a lot more from him, he’s also been a disappointment. He’s not a bad player, but is invisible nearly ever game despite having the ball a lot, which is also weird because his assists (and goals) are quite low. Every single game, invisible and mediocre at best. Hopefully, he gets better because he’s no Bennacer, Tonali or Kessie. Not even close at this point.

Take a look during the big games, who steps up?

  4. Yes I agree .. chukwueze has been a disappointment ..
He shows glimpses of good things ,yes he plays to much with the left foot ,,wingers should use both feet .another real disappointment for me is reinjinders ,yes as has been mentioned,,he always seem to ha e lots of the ball ( possession) his assists are poor …He just seems to run out of ideas …I think our midfield has not created enough in some of the games .
I am not going to be to negative,,as despite that we are doing quite well …I have confidence in our coach piloi ,,,and we will now start to get things together, and I am confident we will start winning many of our games….

  5. Leao had glimpses in his first season. This one does a merry go round with his one predictable trick. No glimpses here. He’s even worse than Antony at United.

  6. I think he’ll adapt if given another season. He’s got pace, needs a better first touch and vision but there’s no reason to doubt his potential yet.

  7. I thought not bringing Chuk to the US tour was either a massive mistake or deliberately setting up Pulisic to succeed by the Us management. He is good enough for this team, and I hope 2nd half of season will be better.
