Pioli focused on ‘massive’ Newcastle clash after ‘heavy’ defeat against Inter – watch

By Isak Möller -

Stefano Pioli has been heavily criticised after Milan’s 5-1 defeat against Inter last night, once again losing the tactical battle against Simone Inzaghi. However, the manager himself believes it wasn’t as bad.

It was the Rossoneri’s fifth consecutive derby defeat and although they had a lot of possession, Inter looked superior for a majority of the game. Once again, Inzaghi’s men hurt them on the counter.

Speaking to MilanTV after the game (see video below), Pioli shared his thoughts on the defeat and also looked ahead to the game against Newcastle on Tuesday.

“I heavy defeat, too heavy. Until the 3-1 goal, the team was set up well even if at times, especially when we conceded, we needed to be more solid and aware. It became tougher after 3-1. We cannot afford to stop playing like that, we’ll learn from these situations.

“I’ll assess the fatigue situation tomorrow morning, I managed the minutes for some of the boys. Getting off to a good start in the Champions League would be massive. We will look to prepare in the best way possible.”

  1. I don’t think Pioli is gonna see the end of october. Last year he was exempted of criticism by Cardinale because of the poor squad depth, but now he has no excuses.

  2. It’s embarrassing, genuinely embarrassing how this guy can be either be too daft or too stubborn to adapt his tactics. Using a box midfield is absolutely useless with the way Pioli sets it up against inter. The first pivot is consistently marked by the double strikers of inter while the second is outnumbered by the 3 in midfield of inter as they play a 5-3-2 out of possession. Against a team like this you can’t afford to not be compact and for the fifth consecutive match he has shown no improvement. Unacceptable to concede 12 goals and only score 1 in 5 games against inter this year. He received the players he so desperately wanted yet this further highlights that the tactical setup was clearly always the problem. Unfortunately I don’t believe unless something further catastrophic occurs that Pioli will be sacked and while I would love someone like Nagelsmann or De Zerbi, both seem hard to reach.

  3. The main problem is pioli just too rigid and limited tactic . this is modern day football . He dont have critical thinking no problem solving no plan b c d e f . Just enough with this man

  4. 5-1 wasn’t too bad compared to 6-1, 7-1, 8-1, 9-1 and so on. Such an idiotic analogy. Loss is a loss! It’s even more bitter since we never won in 5 consecutive games against our neighbor and a rival at the same time. Cardinale should think of his replacement, last season we got lucky to be qualified in UCL due to Juventus’ scandal, but I don’t think we could compete with Spanish or English teams if he still uses the same tactic over and over again. His hesitation to put young players on the field is also questionable.
