Pioli admits he is partly ‘responsible’ for injury crisis and that Maignan’s issue is not ‘short term’

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has taken some responsibility over the injury crisis that the team are currently battling, and gave an update on Mike Maignan’s condition.

Milan left for their winter training camp in Dubai with the objective of fully recovering several injured players and ensuring the squad is in good shape heading into the new year, and yet the problems just keep racking up.

The list of players that will not be available for the first game of 2023 against Salernitana tomorrow includes Mike Maignan, Simon Kjaer, Ballo-Touré, Alessandro Florenzi, Junior Messias, Rade Krunic, Divock Origi, Ante Rebic and Zlatan Ibahimovic.

Pioli spoke to the reporters who gathered at Milanello for his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Salernitana and he was asked about Maignan’s calf problem, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

When will Maignan return?

“At the moment we don’t know. The evaluations tell us that it is not yet possible to push. So I don’t know the timing, certainly not in the short term.”

Why have there been all these injuries?

“I’m responsible because I’m in charge of everything that happens here at Milanello. We’re working to reduce the number of injured players.”
