Pioli ‘satisfied’ with win vs. Bologna and confirms Milan’s signing of Thiaw: “Great potential”

By Isak Möller -

Following the comfortable 2-0 win against Bologna, AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli praised his players for the performance. He also confirmed that the Rossoneri have signed Malick Thiaw from Schalke 04.

The Rossoneri got back to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 win this evening, thanks to goals from Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud, capitalising on Inter’s defeat yesterday. Off the pitch, there has also been some movement.

Speaking to Sky Italia, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli praised his players for tonight’s game and he also confirmed the signing of Thiaw. It’s a welcome addition for the manager as Milan have been looking for a centre-back all summer.

On the match…

“I must say that playing in front of our fans is special, it gives us a passion that we try to transform into energy on the pitch. The team is more aware and mature on the pitch but I think we can do even better, even tonight we forced the depth. The team played at a great pace, I am satisfied knowing that we can still grow a lot.”

On De Ketelaere…

“There is no doubt that Charles has a great talent, he must grow and find a rhythm. However, these are processes that take some time. He has already shown some important things, he is a very intelligent boy and he will only grow more.”

On Leao…

“A player with such important potential must continue to think he wants to improve day after day. I have not done anything, since July 4th Rafa has been very calm, he has never missed a training session. Perhaps the first match against Udinese was not his best possible performance, he is an intelligent guy who wants to do better.”

On the right-wing…

“I’m delighted with Messias and Saelemaekers. We have our own balances that require the winger to try to be dangerous but do a dirty job. Always be balanced, on the right I feel okay with the players I have.”

On Adli…

“I don’t think he can play on the right, I don’t think he’s a player to be moved to the outside.”

On Thiaw…

“He’s is a player with a great potential, he is fast, he is intelligent, he has good technique and physicality. He is a guy who has the right characteristics to be within our group.”

It remains to be seen what will happen with Matteo Gabbia now. He’s a useful player for the UEFA squad list but a loan move could do him well, seeing as he won’t get much playing time at Milan despite the tight schedule.

  1. malick thiaw is going to be our best singing this summer i really like this player thank you maldini for this gift
now i hope Pioli have the courage to let him start and move pierre kalulu to the right back as he is our best option there

  2. I thought the team did quite well tonight ,and I thought Oliver Girouds hold up play was very good ,as it left space for other players to move into ,and yes he scored a good goal also …We can and will get even better ,,,with have a good squad which we will need with all the games coming up in quick succession..
We will I believe compete well in the champions leauge this season …

  3. There is still a problem in the right and we badly miss another box to box. Adli is very soft so we have only Benacer. This is the problem. Hope they will bring one more player this summer.

  4. “right characteristics to be within our group”

Does it means position/role flexibility? I read in transfermarkt that Thiaw played as DM/CM 18 times, he also had 2 assist in 2 appearances playing as CF.

    1. “He’s is a player with a great potential, he is fast, he is intelligent, he has good technique and physicality”

It’s written right before that sentence duh, the right characteristics he has 🤦🏻‍♂️

    1. No club are willing to buy 33 years player that already suffer ACL, just respect his contribution for AC Milan and let him finish his contract. Loan gabbia to club that guaranteed playtime and use primavera player for 5th choice CB . Gabbia need play time to replace kjaer after his contract expire

    2. We are not in Football Manager, its real world. Real strategy is not plug and play, it consist of a lot of factors. Youths isnt always better than oldies.

Kjaer is a leader. He has a lot of experience and able to read the game well, it’s enable him to compete and better younger, faster strikers. I don’t know in the future, but currently he is more useful and dependable than Gabbia.

  5. Messias is really a pain in the ass is style of play is very annoying, I wonder why maldini will make his move permanent…

  6. Because he adds balance. His work rate is excellent, and because Leao does not have defensive discipline, Messias must cover for him. There is your answer.

  7. Because he adds balance. His work rate is excellent, and Leao does not have sufficient defensive discipline or tasks, Messias must cover for him. There is your answer.
