Pioli reflects on ‘small step forward’ for Milan and praises Jovic: “A lot of quality”

By Isak Möller -

After the game between AC Milan and Frosinone, which his side won 3-1, Stefano Pioli spoke to the club’s official channel about the performance and what is next. He also praised several of his players, including Luka Jovic.

It was a crucial win for the Rossoneri as they asserted their position in the standings and also put some pressure on Inter. Just three points separate the two sides now, with the Nerazzurri taking on Napoli this evening.

Several players did well for Milan, as you can see in our player ratings, and Pioli had only good things to say to MilanTV (see video below) after the game. In addition to Theo Hernandez, he also praised Jovic who bagged his first goal for the club.

On Theo at centre-back…

“Theo is a top player so when he stepped up to play in that role, I knew that he would approach it with concentration and focus. He did well, but we had to work a lot without the ball against a good team that forced us to work hard.”

On Frosinone…

“Frosinone are a confident team, they move the ball around well. We tried to break up their play, we didn’t always do that but we worked as a team. We didn’t risk a lot a kept trying to build something. We put in another serious performance. Of course, it’s only a small step forward.”

On Jovic…

I still think Luka has a lot of quality. Physically he’s doing much better than he was a month or 90 days ago, we knew he had this odd issue at the start of the season. But he’s a player, and a player must have this quality. I think he can up the intensity even more, but he did well in possession and when he had to come alive in the box. I’m convinced that he can be a big player for us.”

On Pulisic’s goal and Maignan’s assist…

“Yes we did well, Mike is great at that, but for that ball you also need to time your run. Our opponents came at us and when that happens, you get more space. We read the situation well and with two quality players like Mike and Christian, it’s easier”

On what’s next…

“We need to work, obviously there is some recovery time for the 5/6 players who played three games in quick succession. It’s an important week for us because we have a big game coming up, against a strong Atalanta. We want to give our all and keep our foot on the gas.”

The game against Atalanta is scheduled for 18:00 CET on Saturday and Olivier Giroud will be back for that game. Simon Kjaer could also make a return, which would be a big boost given the current lack of centre-backs.
