Pioli could field unprecedented three-man backline against Tottenham

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan will take on Tottenham in the Champions League on Tuesday evening and after the win against Torino, Stefano Pioli will only make a few changes to the XI. In fact, he could field an unprecedented defence.

The Rossoneri managed to end their poor run of form by beating Torino on Friday evening and the 3-4-3 seemingly did the trick. As such, Pioli will continue with the formation for the game against Tottenham.

As was reported by Tuttosport this morning, Fikayo Tomori has recovered from his injury and he should start in the heart of the three-man backline. Pierre Kalulu is expected to be on the right and Malick Thiaw, who has impressed lately, will get the spot to the left.

This would be an unprecedented three-man backline for Milan. In the game against Fiorentina prior to the World Cup break, they used a similar XI with the three aforementioned defenders but it was still a four-man backline.

Probable Milan XI (3-4-1-2): Tatarusanu; Kalulu, Tomori, Thiaw; Saelemaekers (Calabria), Bennacer, Tonali, Hernandez; Krunic; Giroud, Leao.

  1. Pioli must mark Harry Kane, because he scored most of goals. But he must mark Perisic (with Saelemakers best) and Son, because this trio is most dangerous.
He should put Leao and Rebic and play like against Inter, only to try score on counterattack. Rebic is much faster than Giroud, and later on put Giroud.

    1. Exactly. Rebic playing as our number 9 has made us more unpredictable in time past. It’s way better to play him from the beginning than Giroud.

  2. To beat Conte 3-5-2 Pioli must play 4-4-2 switches to 3-4-2-1
    A. 3-5-2
    -Tomori/Thiaw/Kalulu defense.
    – Krunic(Box2box)-Tonali (Playmaker). Hernandez(left push forward to Id Giroud/Leao), /Salsa(right) retract to RW/R defense to mark Sung
    – Pogeba(covering Salsa). Leao (wide-left).
    – Giroud hold defense as much as he can
    – (Rebic/DK) attack

  3. Long as Kalulu plays on the right to cover as a half and half cb/rb and Salemaekers puts in a shift like Torino we’re good Thiaw and Tomori can easily bottle Kane. We got a break with Bentacur but Perisic is my biggest issue. Isma, Salemaekers and/or Kalulu have to double him full time. Not too worried by Son. Sandro/Tomori have that all day. Much as I like Ante and Rafa up front Pioli isn’t that guy so Giroud will start. Pressing or lack thereof will determine our result. We press well we win. We sit back and Kane will guaranteed punish us on set pieces even if we hold them in open play. My hope is in Isma/tonali/brahim press and Rafa/Theo running spurs rugged. My prediction is a probable 0-0 tie, but my hope is 1-0 Milan. Regardless, Forza Milan.
