AC Milan clinched their second consecutive win after coming back from behind against Cagliari this evening. Stefano Pioli was understandably pleased with his players and also praised Yacine Adli, who made his first appearance.
Against the run of play, Cagliari managed to take the lead in the middle of the first half after a collective mistake at the back. The Rossoneri didn’t give up, though, and scored not just one but two goals at the end of the first half (Okafor and Tomori).
Loftus-Cheek then killed the game with a screamer and it was also the final goal of the game, which ended 3-1. Speaking to Sky Italia, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli shared his thoughts on the performance and what’s to come for his side.
On the game…
“We started the match well, we could have taken the lead but we weren’t clinical enough. Then we conceded a goal due to carelessness. After that, we did well to turn it around with our principles and to win a game that certainly wasn’t easy.”
“I started with this objective and the club did well to give me just that. I don’t have a lot of players and I prefer it, but those I have are ready. In the long run, we will have the benefits of increased motivation and fewer injuries. It’s not that I will make changes just because of the tight schedule, but also to keep the team’s level high.”
How do you rate Loftus-Cheek?
“Ruben is a strong player, very complete, who gives us everything: on the ball, with his runs, physicality and on inactive balls. He’s very important, but he needs to be managed given that he hasn’t played much in recent years.”
How do you rate Adli?
“He did well. I’m very happy for him. He has played in this role since 10 July with a lot of availability and desire to improve. He always reviews the performances of his teammates in that role. He has done many good things and he can do others better, but it’s a performance that gives me the possibility to consider Adli ready for that role.”
Milan have great potential…
“We played a game that wasn’t easy tactically. To be dangerous we had to be balanced, but some cracks showed. We controlled the game. Okafor played a very good game: he can play as a striker or as a winger in place of Leao. I have many flexible players, perhaps only Chukwueze can only play on the right. Jovic is also recovering in good condition, who gave me good sensations against Verona.”
How to fix the defence?
“In the first half, we didn’t risk anything, except on the throw-in for the goal, which we had to be more careful about. In the second half, we missed a few too many passes and conceded a few things, but it’s not that easy to lead for 95 minutes. Then it’s clear that we had to do better.”
What is Reijnders like?
“He’s a great player, I’d like him to fit in a little more between the lines. He has intelligence and technical clarity… Today he proved them. Musah can also play as a midfielder and this makes me feel comfortable in replacing Krunic.”
How great will the new stadium be for the fans?
“I believe that the future of a great club passes through the passion for San Siro, but it passes through innovation and a stadium of our own. The new stadium will make the club even more glorious and competitive.”
Milan will take on Lazio this weekend and will thus have to recharge their batteries in order to go again on Saturday. The Biancocelesti have had a very tough start to the season and the Rossoneri are thus clear favourites.
