Mike Maignan is back to his best form, and with this has come an increased number of pleas to renew his AC Milan contract.

As MilanNews recall, for some time now Milan fans have been clamouring on social media for Maignan to extend his deal which expires next year. The management have somewhat backed themselves into a corner after the frost that emerged earlier in the year, so fresh influence is needed.

Public pressure

Now, the players are working on it too. Matteo Gabbia responded to Maignan’s post on Instagram after the Lazio win with a simple: “Please renew.” A few days ago, Adrien Rabiot did his bit in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Do I hope he renews his contract with Milan? Yes, obviously, like everyone at Milan. Maignan is an extraordinary goalkeeper and there aren’t many in the world as good as him,” he said.

“He’s a key player for us, and Mike loves the Rossoneri shirt. I’m not getting involved in the negotiations between him and the club’s management, but I hope he continues to grow at this club, with a coach like Allegri, and in this group.”

In his press conference before the match against Lazio, Massimiliano Allegri was asked about the Frenchman’s future and he was perhaps a bit more diplomatic, though he did suggest some hope.

“Mike has always been one of the best goalkeepers around. So I’m not surprised by his performance. As for his contract, the club is thinking about it.

“They’re working to give this team a future and stability in the coming years. I talk to Mike, but I talk to him on the pitch. And Filippi, his coach, also talks to us about this. I’m happy, I see him calm: he’s confirming his qualities.”

The new coach pushed hard for Maignan to stay in the summer when negotiations were ongoing with Chelsea, and will certainly continue his pressure to convince him to renew his contract. Speaking of which, Igli Tare also provided an update pre-match.

“We had a good discussion with Maignan at the start of the year, along with the club and the coach. We’re happy he’s having a great season; that’s what we expected. We’re talking calmly, but right now we’re focused on this match, which will be crucial for the league table,” he said.

The situation is well known: the parties had reached an agreement of €5m net per, but then the club – partly due to some of the Frenchman’s less-than-stellar performances – decided to lower their offer to €4m.

Obviously Maignan was not happy, and from there, a silence began that effectively stalled everything. However, Milan cannot afford to lose one of the best goalkeepers in the world for free, and therefore will have to do everything to convince him to renew his contract

  1. We should relax and enjoy MM16, probably his last season. No need to add pressure to him, so Gabia did no good. Anyhow, Milan should offer the most it can as this guy deserves it (plus he is the captain).

  2. they retracted a deal over a discrepancy of 1 million per year? why even bother doing that and offeringhim a deal, for 5 million a year, including a transfer fee, you won’t do better.

  3. There is no need for pressure to be applied. Sack Furlani and he will resign in a blink of an eye. As always Forza Milan and FU Redbird
