Player Ratings: AC Milan 2-0 Lazio – Hernandez steps up; Krunic pivotal

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan clinched all three points against Lazio this afternoon with ease and thus boosted their chances of finishing in the top four. Several players did really well and down below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): Lazio had a whopping zero shots on target so the goalkeeper was barely called into action. His passing was quick and solid as always.

Calabria (6): He was carded towards the end of the first half and was subbed off at the interval. But he did well to contain Zaccagni this afternoon.

Kjaer (7): A rock at the back and he made several crucial interceptions/blocks this afternoon. Then again, Lazio had major struggles up front this game and didn’t test Milan that much.

Tomori (7): Calm when in possession, bar maybe one or two times, and he used his pace (as always) to gain an advantage over his opponents.

Hernandez (7.5 – MOTM): It was a solid game overall from him, but that solo run and that strike sealed the three points for Milan. If Leao were to miss out on the first leg against Inter, then the Frenchman will be the key.

Krunic (7.5): He has really grown into this role and today he played it to perfection. Covering space when Lazio went forward, making blocks and sacrificing himself for the greater good of the defence. And today he was also really good on the ball, hence the rating.

Tonali (6.5): He ran a lot out there today and helped Milan keep the high press throughout most of the game. It’s clear that he really likes that aspect of the game, happy to sacrifice some time on the ball for defensive duties.

Messias (6.5): A refreshing display from the Brazilian, as he almost always made the right decision and was an asset for Milan out there today. He did particularly well in getting past his opponent and driving forward with the ball.

Bennacer (7.5): Absolutely instrumental in Milan’s press play and it paid off when he scored the first goal of the game. As with Krunic and the tandem, the Algerian is really thriving in this position.

Leao (N/A): He was subbed off after just 11 minutes due to a groin injury and one can only hope that it’s nothing serious.

Giroud (6.5): He got the assist for the first goal thanks to really good pressing but other than that t was a pretty average game from him. Still, it was an important assist.

Substitutes

Saelemaekers (6.5): He did really well on the left flank and above all allowed Hernandez to roam forward more often. That’s one aspect Pioli can take advantage of if Leao can’t make it on Wednesday. Plus, Saelemaekers has been in good form himself lately.

Kalulu (6): He did what was needed off the bench and not much more. Solid.

Thiaw (6): A strong performance from him in defence, but he missed a pretty good chance on a corner.

Rebic (6): He had a ball in the back of the net but he was just offside. Calm finish, though.

Ballo-Toure (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

  1. This is Milan that I know. Looking like prime Barcelona against big teams and looking like kittens against small teams

    Yeah.

Alex as left winger is better than Rebic, origi, CDK, diaz there omg

    1. “Alex as left winger is better than Rebic, origi, CDK, diaz there omg”

Indeed. One has to wonder why Pioli hasn’t played him there before… Lightyears ahead of the others.

      1. He is playing good football in the last month or so. He was horrible in most of the season but redeemed himself lately. Our lack of depth in the attack bited us too many times

  2. Good work to the team.
But i still believe that Pioli doesn’t yet have idea how to beat a defensive team, and the league is 80% of teams coming to defend when playing Milan.
Milan is doing well against the big teams because they would attack, but the league or top 4 isn’t won just beating only the big teams or 20% attacking team that is in the league.
For this, if Pioli doesn’t have solution, he should leave

    1. Im not pioli fans , but i want to ask you . Do you want to leave your job now in real life just because someone asking you leave your job in comment section ? He is already play full starter and win ,so what do you want from him anymore ? Win sixtuple like barca and bayern with mediocre bench player? You can become best coach in the world if you can win sixtuple with bench player like origi, tata, rebic, cdk, ballo toure, bakayoko, gabbia

    2. I mostly agree or they hire a T2 that is good in offence tactics like NFL a offence coach and a defence coach
      That can maybe work
Cause I would be sad to see Pioli leave
Butt then again he is not good in offence
      Anf that is frustrating

  3. Dominant win by Milan. Had a control throughout tye game. At no point Lazio had any chance to threaten Maignan.
High press and a counter attack. Pilismo 101. High press from Bennacer forced a turnover on the 1st , and a one man counter attack and amazing Theo goal on the 2nd.
Now we need inter v Roma and Juve v Atalanta to finish in a draw.
On to the UCL semi final

    1. We should pray Roma beats Inter. That way, we remain in 4th. And, if I was to get on either of those two bottling fourth, my money’s on Roma. Inter are more clutch so they might win every game remaining except today and vs Napoli if Napoli show up to play which they might not. Napoli might even start fringe players till season ends now. Praying Roma wins today but by 1 goal coz of goal difference..

      1. i can understand your sentiment but drawing would be the best in my view because after inter meets us in the 2nd cl semi may 18th they will have to meet napoli may 21rst and then on the 24rth meet fiorentina in the coppa italia final and then meet atalanta the 28th, that is a bunch of pretty troublesome fixtures around the corner for them as io see it,

        1. Roma win and atalanta win vs juve. That will make battle for top 4 more better as we can see six club fight for 3 slot left in CL next season

      2. The point is to be top 4 at the end of the season, not this week. That’s why we need our competitors to lose points and best way for that when they actually play against each other is a draw. Well unfortunately inter beat Roma, but hopefully juve and Atalanta end up tied

    1. Ikr

Those wannabe pundits became more and more obnoxious with how they keeps asking the management to sack Pioli.

  4. Remarkable collective display, thats what it is most important. It’s vital that we can build on that against Shinter. For the rest, we can only pray for a fast Rafa recovery.

  5. BTW: I fully agree with Krunic’s rating. The tactical awareness of this guy is really amazing, we are very lucky to have him on our squad.

  6. i dont want to complain as we actually played a fairly great game and deservedly won but maignans descriptiion isnt correct in regard of passes in my book as he actually made several misplaced passes that is rarely seen from him,
Either way, fine win and we are far from stamping out of the cl qualification.

    1. And you only noticed the misplaced passes and failed to point out his assist?

“You will never satisfy Milan fans”
      Wonderful

      1. come on i didnt complain but just pointed out that he actually did make more failed passes than usual, nothing more nothing less.

  7. A championship performance. Tonali was superb. He’s underrated. Most of the criticism of him is unfair. The issue with teams that play defensive is due to rotation, nothing more. As long as M&M learn from this year’s mercato, next season we’ll be fighting for the title.

Hopefully Inter can whack Roma today and put them out of the running for the top 4.

    1. not that im overall disagreeing with what you are saying here nut i would prersonally prefer a draw between them as that would hurt both of them in the long run.

      1. “not that im overall disagreeing with what you are saying here nut i would prersonally prefer a draw between them as that would hurt both of them in the long run.”

        101% agree.

      2. I have no issue with Inter finishing in the top 4, especially if it means Juve and Roma miss out. I don’t subscribe to the theory that I should hate them because they’re our local rivals. I hate Juventus, because they have cheated Serie A for decades. During the Lippi era, when they were on the gas, during Calciopoli and now, when they’ve been cooking the books. Juve have damaged the reputation of Serie A. They have dragged Serie A into the gutter. And Napoli? Napoli also screwed us out of a scudetto in 1990 when Alemao took a dive and Lo Bello absolutely ****** us in Verona. I have a long memory and I don’t recall Inter ever screwing us in the way Juve, Napoli and other teams have, so I hope they thrash Roma.

        1. It wasnt my intention to imply that at all either but overall those two teams drawing hurting them both could pave an easier road for cl as i see it,

    2. “Tonali was superb. He’s underrated. ”

He gave several horrible passes in the attacking half though. Awful, awful passes. But if we forget about those he was decent.

    3. It’s not unfair. He’s just not as good as anyone thinks he is but he gets by because he’s Italian and called ”Mr. Milan” by fans. If anything, he is overrated because he has been poor for most of the season.

      1. The most USELESS stat in football? Pass completion. Most players pad out that stat by passing sideways. Tonali has 2 goals and 6 assists, for a 22 year old DM, that is outstanding. He put a goal on a plate for Thiaw, he missed.

        1. Exactly. These guys want/deserve someone old like Arthur Melo or Jorginho to short pass the ball back or sideways 2000 times each match with an accuracy of over 98%. Result? Game lost.

Tonali is a fantastic, complete midfielder. Probably the best in his age class actually.

  8. We are the real “pazza” team after all. Pazzo Milan amalooo.
No seriously, I hate this inconsistency…50M for a 20 goals (minimum) bomber this summer or go f yourself.

  9. I can rest easy that the comments section won’t go beserk today. No sack Pioli today, phew. Dont even see them esp after a completely dominant performance. …the usual. That’s better than the 2-0 imo 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    1. Makes no sense? Everyone know Pioli play good counter attacking football, it’s not what people are complaining about. Plan A worked today, problem is when it doesn’t

      1. Yeah. Some people think one tactic works 24/7 against any team in the world. One good match means all matches should be good as long as the coach and players are the same? 😀

  10. I just hope leao is fine and can play against inter this wednesday.
For the table, i still hope it’s gonna be napoli, juve, milan and inter for ucl.
Roma and lazio are not ready yet for ucl.
They are suitable for uel for now.
I just want italy teams to continue to do well in europe next season like they do this season.

  11. Very generous ratings. But Tonali 6.5? He shouldn’t be anything more than a 4. Was USELESS throughout entire game.. Killed ALL attacks that even dared to involve him.. all of his tackles failed.. passes aimless.. and he gets a 6.5 for…. running and pressing? That’s it? LOL

  12. Solid display for a much needed win. Let’s hope we the other teams we are chasing stumble. Hope Leao is ok. Wednesday going to be tense – city will be on fire for a few weeks

  13. I paid close attention to Krunic the whole game. Boy was I impressed!! I used to hate the guy and say ‘he is not Milan quality’ boy has he done a 360 on me.
Absolutely brilliant performance from the boys but want to send a shoutout to him specifically… if he plays like this against Turkey boy and Barella and them he will be crucial.
Big ups to Milan and the boys.
    Forza Milan

    1. “I used to hate the guy and say ‘he is not Milan quality’ boy has he done a 360 on me.”

Yep. Ditto. It seems they had his role completely wrong in the beginning and gets to show his true skills.

  14. 6 for Calabria who let Zaccagni cross into dangerous areas 4 times in the first half, and 6 to Thiaw who was a monster at the back in the second half – world class centerback in the making.

    1. Yeah thiaw definitely another maldini master signing. Hopefully he makes up for maldinis cdk horrible signing.

  15. I really feel that poili isnt much of the problem because the squad herself lacks depth, no replacement for almost 11 starters of Milan unlike inter,Roma, Juventus , to me poili has manged the resources at his disposal. Adil , Charles , ballo ,origi nothing to show forth.
