Reports: Thiaw ‘one step away’ as Newcastle offer €40m to Milan – replacement identified

Malick Thiaw is reportedly very close to completing a move to Newcastle as the English side have increased their offer to €40m, which Milan are prepared to accept.

Thiaw has been heavily linked with Newcastle in the last few days, following an initial offer of €30m, and Gianluca Di Marzio reported this morning that an improved offer would be tabled. Sure enough, with multiple sources now confirming this, a transfer is getting closer.

Improved offer confirmed

According to Matteo Moretto, Newcastle have come up to €40m including bonuses and Thiaw has already given his green light to the move. In the event of a sale, Milan are ready to focus on Fiorentina’s Pietro Comuzzo as the replacement.

Pietro Mazzara and Daniele Longo are also confirming the €40m offer, stating that a response is expected shortly from Milan and the CEO Giorgio Furlani. The latter journalist even tweeted that the defender is ‘one step away’ from joining Newcastle.

The offer, per Longo, is €36m plus an additional €4m in bonuses. Considering that Milan paid less than €10m for the defender back in 2022, a sizeable capital gain would be registered if he does end up leaving for €40m.

As for the pursuit of Comuzzo, an offer of €25m plus bonuses could soon be sent to Fiorentina, according to Moretto. At the age of 20 and with a lot of potential, it would certainly be an ideal replacement.

  1. would they like to take Bennacer for just 10M?

he and Tonali used to be a force to be recon with

    (pss guys play along… lol)

40M for Thiaw is insane, let’s make a run while we can!

  2. Good! Thanks, Newcastle!
Next week, hopefully, Leoni is coming!
Then we should get rid of parasites like Bennacer, Chukwueze and Morata.
Musah should stay, as a backup

      1. Newcastle are desperate to close a deal for almost any of their targets lol after being publicly rejected by the likes of Sesko and Joao Pedro.

I think that’s whats pushing them to slightly overpay for Thiaw, appease their coach and fanbase.

However Liverpool reportedly had a 30mn+ bid rejected for Leoni, so we need to act FAST if we are to get in a quality replacement. Am afraid we’ll settle for that Leicester CB and miss out on Leoni / Comuzzo (scalvini is way too expensive)

    1. morata is already gone. bennacer, adli and probably Bondo are the only ones left to sell. but off course to lose Thiaw for another 20 year old to come in is BS.

      1. Italian registration helps. And 40M for Thiaw is a steal of the century. I think we all forget how clumsy he is in penalty box. He only has backside passing going for him. He literally is a 50-50 and he always wanted to leave at some point. Italian will stay for longer, so Comuzzo or Leoni for him is a win imo.

Bondo and Terracianno are deals. Both joining Cremonese on dry loans.

    2. Musah are headless chicken. No room for him, nothingham will build him soon possible with another 40m pound. Good job

  3. Good business. I like Thiaw but 40m offer is too good to refuse. It would be nice if we make a move for Tomiyasu on a free transfer too. His injured until Oct but was released by Arsenal. He can operate as RB or as CB if Allegri plays 352. His only 26 years old with proven serie A experience. That would be a good buy for us.

    1. he has also missed 124 matches since 2018 season so its basically 3 seasons missed out of 7, sounds pretty damn risky unless he joins us at a very low salary on a short term contract with the option for us to renew. I would be highly surprised if we actually did go for him even if he has been good while fit.

      1. Risky yes, but can cover both CB and RB (im not convinced by Athekame yet, think like Jimenez he’ll need a couple seasons to adapt)

So if its not an outlandish wage or signing on fee, I’d take him … wasn’t very injury prone when last in Serie A with Bologna

        1. Sure if on a very low or performance dictated salary I can also live with it but there simply is no way around that his fitness has gone drastically downward since his arrival in EPL 3 years ago. Last year he played only 6 minutes. The other seasons isn’t especially impressive for that matter.

          1. Agreed. It could be due to arsenal training methods. It’s a good gamble if he takes a pay cut. My worry is Real has the option to buy Jimenez back end of season for 12m. If he plays well they will so we need to have someone capable to step in. Tomiyasu if fit is a good RB worthy of Milan.

          2. It could also be that he is brittle or has become that. I agree I’m not to fond of those deals with Real Madrid but I guess we can always hope that he wants to stay beyond this season.

  4. Hi Milan fans. I come in peace. I have been reading mixed comments on this defender and I don’t know much about him. Some fans saying you should keep him but a lot saying take the money and run as he’s not that good. Could you give an honest opinion? Thank you. P.s I think your a special iconic club!

    1. Honestly, an average defender at best. Anyone who’s watched him in a Milan shirt shall tell you that, objectively. I mean he’s got potential, but he’s had that very same potential for a couple of years now without any sort of progress! He’s error prone. Scored twice against us last season! He simply doesn’t seem to be learning. And that’s in a 3-man defense. If Newcastle play 4 at the back – good luck! His injury record is one to watch out for as well.

    2. Newcastle fan?

He looked a revelation when he first came into the side and was hitting his stride when he was disrupted by injury. It took longer than it should to recover and find anything that looked like form but to be honest it’s hard to judge anyone fairly in last season – we were a shambles. We also had no one protecting the centre backs for his entire time around the first team, which is a problem you don’t have (nor do we now, ironically).

Good player but as others have said, never saw a 40m bid coming and it’s too good to turn down.

    3. I’d ignore a lot of the noise; just the usual results-based grumbling. He’s what you’d expect for that money, bearing in mind a slight ‘monied EPL club tax’ – professional, highly competent, not the best in any particular area but very modern abilities with the ball at his feet. Not a leader but you have Botman (grrr) already who should partner him well. I think there’s a lot of potential there if he has the right leadership around, think the way Konate benefits from van Dyck.

  5. So his replacement will be comuzzo not leoni. Pioli will block comuzzo to ACM . 25m euro offer also cannot convince fiorentina

    1. Yeah they just recently renewed his contract and I doubt that they would even want to entertain such offer with other reply than we can sod off.

        1. My knowledge of De Koni is a bit limited even though I have seen him in action on a few occasions then I wont really argue if it would be a good or bad transfer as I doesn’t think I’m qualified for such assessment.

  6. Thank you Newcastle!
There’s not a chance an error prone like thiaw is actually worth 40m.
    He’s nothing but a 20m max player.

And some fans here are the biggest hypocrites.
Some of you were going for thiaw’s head when he made mistake after mistake.
Now you bunch suddenly saying he has high ceiling bla bla bla.

  7. I’ve never forgiven him for getting too tight and allowing Kean to turn him and getting sent off in a match we should have been beating Juve in. I just hope the replacement is already considered and lined up…not seeing what opportunities the market throws up in the final hours. Hopefully we’ve already made in roads when we were hoping Como was taking him.

  8. If we get 40 for Thiaw then Fiorentina will ask us for 40. Leoni’s price will suddenly be 50. I sure hope we’ve confirmed availability of our replacement options before shipping out Thiaw.

  9. Many times I said, furlani will open the table, thanks Newcastle to bring another Milan deadwood for 40m fee. Woww. Good job for Tare too. Now Milan can focus on Comuzzo, his price more realistic than leoni.

  10. Milan should focus on Comuzzo. Pioli like Benny, Milan should offer bennacer + 15m for Comuzzo. Win win solutions.

  11. Please milan, agree all terms with Parma for leoni before selling thiaw. I do t want to sell him and for some reason every team we negotiate with plays hardball and I don’t want tk be left with a free agent

  12. I thought we needed Maldini to do any business, how come Jashari rejected everyone and now we are selling fringe players for big profit?

    Must be magic

  13. comuzzo has just limped off his friendly game. please god let this transfer happen. thiaw has just not made the step we need at milan

  14. Everybody is like COMUZZO, LEONI. Large bids have already been rejected for the latter. Are we going to pay 50M for Leoni? Meanwhile, Fiorentina can’t be stupid enough to sell Comuzzo for 25M. Let’s see what happens. Higher likelihood of some rando from France or lower table PL deadwood arriving than Comuzzo or Leoni, and then the question will be was is it an improvement over Thiaw? All this effort to improve midfield only to potentially weaken defense, where we are already dealing with a new LB and RB. Defense wins titles in Serie A and we’ll be sorting our out for the first half of the season…

    1. Meanwhile, everyone seems to have forgotten that Milan already accepted 25m from Como for Thiaw, but he didn’t want to leave. Well, there’s still Tomori, Gabbia and Pavlovic. I hope this late disruption don’t affect Allegri’s flow, because like you said, “Defence wins title in Serie À…”

  15. Furlani only cares about one thing: capital gain. And there were people on here thinking this management wouldn’t accept an offer 40 or just below for Thiaw. It’s too late in the window and Comuzzo just limped off in the first half. How can we play 3 in the back with no depth at CB?

    1. Dude relax and calm down . Defender not only comuzzo & leoni in this world. The market still open and many good defender available there. ACM also can offer some pioli ex player to reduce comuzzo price such as bennacer, chukwueze, or terraciano

      1. What world do you live in? Who are these CBs that are available 8 days before the season starts? If it’s a young player like Comuzzo or Leoni, they’ll need time to get acclimated. And stop with this player swap nonsense, this isn’t Fifa.

  16. we have Gabbia for replace Thiaw 😂😂😂😂
what a wrong desicion from idiots to sale Thiaw. This club every day is more joke with owners . Can some tell them its not baseball, its football, you cant sell best 2 players 15days before start season 😂😂😂
I will agian watch champions league at TV and next year too
